It's been so long since I've had a Hi-Fi and so much has changed with tapes and CDs obsolete. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for a quality sound? Separate amplifier and SSD or an all in one system?

All my music is now on my hard drive in MP3 format.

What's the sound quality like compared to hi-fi separates?

Love the quality. I used to be a Bose man prior to these but Bose just becomes ridiculous £££

I searched for an alternative and Fenton all the way for me. The power is phenomenal and the bass.

We hook up the Kareoke to them too and have some great nights.

I recently brought this recently https://petertyson.co.uk/yamaha-r-n803d ... -amplifier paired with these speakers https://petertyson.co.uk/wharfedale-dia ... d0QAvD_BwE

Think I got knocked off about 40 quid when I pestered them to do me a deal. Love it so far, I've got the Yamaha app that plays via Spotify or Tidal. I have lots of files in CD quality (flac) that I have on an external hard drive that I connect and play, that was a pain as wouldn't read it formatting via a Windows tool, but got it sorted eventually via a third party app. I was using home cinema surround but ended up with a neater soundbar for the TV as home cinema wasted when only 1 good film comes out every couple of years now

I initially was going for this but fancied a bit more power, looks a nice little compact set uphttps://www.whathifi.com/denon/d-m41dab/review

That's a coincidence, I bought the same amp about a year ago and like it a LOT, paired with DALI Spector 2s (absolute bargains) in the kitchen. Speakers are so good I decided to upgraded to DALI Specktor 6s in the living room. They are phenomenal and I'm dead fussy about speakers. . And for those I use an aincient Arcam A75 amp. I found an old wiring diagram from the 1940s that fake a centre channel so I've got a switch to use that circuit which adds an old KEF Q series centre speaker for TV. They'll get 1000s of hrs use in the next decade or two so although not cheap they're great value. I thought my old speakers were good but the DALI's make it sound like you're hearing everything for the first time again.

I've just looked them up. They're considered 'budget' speakers at £500!

They're budget for their class, to my ears they're 2 grands worth. Speakers get better with age and I expect to have them for 20yrs so cost per week is trivial if that's one of your pleasures. The DALI spector 2s are fantastic too unless you've got a big room and they're about 200quid at Richer Sounds. Every time you power them up you feel like you did the right thing and that's worth 50p imo. You work hard Derek, you deserve it :)

Btw don't get suckered into expensive cables. You can't beat std house electric cable that's about 50p a meter.

I got some Ruark MR1 Mk2s last year, and I've been really happy with them. They're small and cost about £300, but sound great, look great, and are really easy to connect to over bluetooth or cables.

In the nineties, I listened to a walkman for years using dirt cheap headphones. When I eventually bought a decent pair it was almost like rediscovering music, hearing sounds on my favourite tracks I never heard before. :D

As for cables, I've never understood the purpose of gold-plated connectors. They either make contact or they don't!

MP3?

You should have done FLAC. That's what I did before I then sold my cd collection.

Here is my set up in the study. Sonos amp and Epos ES 11 Speakers (made the list of the top 30 speakers of all time - https://www.whathifi.com/au/features/be ... s-lifetime)

My old music collection was on tape, and my old tape deck chewed them all up. On the plus side, I built quite an impressive bridge linking two pieces of furniture with my old cassette boxes. It was a talking point. People who visited me thought they were all glued together and wondered what was holding the bottom tapes in place. It was an architectural masterpiece. :D
