Andy Shortland’s petition:

Make it illegal for employers to stop contacting employees after work hours

On the back of Portugal making it law preventing employers from contacting their employees after work hours I would like it made law for the UK government to adopt the same ruling, safeguarding any employee being contacted own time by the disregarding employer after working hours.

In an effort to create a more healthier work-life balance with increased people working from home on the back of Covid, I feel it necessary for employees with their mental health & well being in mind to have the right to switch off without having any worries, stress or the anxiety of having to be contacted in their own time, bearing in mind that they may have been at home during work hours constantly for their employer leading up until & at times into their own time.

[edit] - one bit of wording that i would change in the text tho is this part:

Make it illegal for employers to stop contacting employees after work hours

I thinik it would make more sense if it read:

Make it illegal for employers to contact employees after work hours

also, to gain more support, I think it might be useful to add a caveat where an employee can be contacted by the employer after hours. examples could be where the employee needs a response from the employer on some topic, or where the employer needs to relay info that is of benefit to the employee. etc, etc

4 😩, I wish proof read it umpteen times before I pulled the trigger, in hindsight Jim’s right, thinking about it what I should have said maybe was for employees to have the right to “opt in/out” for their employer to contact them after working hours.. on well it’s done now 🙄
