Howdy. It would be handy to have a free text editor / scratchpad at both the automation & rule level so that you could keep track of changes, or explain to your future self why you did something in that particular way etc.

That's actually a sensible idea as most coders comment code and it seems logical to do the same in rules.

There will be a lot of fun to be had reviewing old files to see what you were thinking - and thinking' What WAS I thinking'.

Even more so now given all the functionality that is now present in BA due to some of the excellent enhancements made over the years...

+1 from me also - may i suggest that it be possible to add on a rolling basis, where each note is timestamped. that way, you can monitor the evolution of the rule, rather than having a monolithic note that you offer no timing context. obviously coupled up with the ability to edit/remove existing *notes*..

Great idea. Also, I raised this as a suggestion a while ago but not heard anything since, but could we have autonumbering of rules in baf files, with the relevant log file entry referencing the rule number ?
I'm running baf's with over 500 lines that re-use signals and SV's and although they write out to the log I have a devil of a time relating an entry back to the exact rule that triggered.
Combining Rule numbers with free text entries wopuld make fault finding a rules file so much less painful. "Where and why " :)

+1 and I've also been considering posting a suggestion that we have a Notes field within a Rule that gets referred to by the Log. Something can currently be scraped together using an appropriately named SV or signal but it's not ideal.

I would love to see this. At the moment I have a word document with a heading for each rule and a description of what it does, as well as a list of stored values and there purpose. Having it right there in Guardian would be so much better. I'd also love the ability to disable and enable individual rules
