At the risk of Dallas telling me "It's already there" which he has had to do a couple of times recently is there a way to get into BA in some form the number of Places a market will pay?

There might be a better way, but assuming the market is well-formed you can do it based on the book percentage.

Around 200% = 2 places, around 300% = 3 places etc.

Dallas has a file that counts the number of runners, which might get you halfway there

I'd love to know the logic behind what data BA exposes and what it doesn't.

Inplay - yes
number OfWinners - no
numberOfActiveRunners - yes

This won't work because if there was originally 8 runners the place market will be for 3 places, but if there is a non-runner then the market is reduced to 7 runners but will remain for 3 places.

Agreed James, don't know why I forgot that one but ... based on Shaun's post it really would be nice if that number was made directly available.
