I have an automation rule that will go ahead and green all once a profit of 0.35p or more is made. The general settings for the rule will allow the rule to trigger up to 3 times and wait 3 seconds before rearming.

On a horse race the rule was triggered three times and instead of a gain I actually lost money. Here is the Automation log:

12/7/2021 17:09:01: [G_Auto 1] : £ 2.00 Back bet placed on Collins Grey Lady at 200. Entirely unmatched when it initially reached the market. Ref: 252895098438
12/7/2021 17:09:50: [G_Auto 1] : Modify bet persistence 252895098438 from 'Cancel' to 'Take SP'

12/7/2021 17:14:31: [G_Auto 1] : Greened up Collins Grey Lady by Laying 3.08 at 4.4
12/7/2021 17:14:33: [G_Auto 1] : Cancelling bets 252895513310
12/7/2021 17:14:35: [G_Auto 1] : Greened up Collins Grey Lady by Laying 0.72 at 8.8
12/7/2021 17:14:38: [G_Auto 1] : Greened up Collins Grey Lady by Laying 1.08 at 5.9

Here is the text from the "Betting Profit & Loss" section of my Betfair account in regards to the details of transactions in regards to this race:

Selection Odds Stake (£) Bid type Placed Profit/Loss (£)
Collins Grey Lady 6.77 2.00 Back 07-Dec-21 17:09 11.54
Collins Grey Lady 4.30 1.67 Lay 07-Dec-21 17:14 -5.51
Collins Grey Lady 5.20 0.72 Lay 07-Dec-21 17:14 -3.02
Collins Grey Lady 5.60 1.08 Lay 07-Dec-21 17:14 -4.96

Back subtotal: 11.54
Lay subtotal: -13.49
Market subtotal: -1.95
Commission : 0.00
Net Market Total: -1.95

What I don't understand is why the rule continued to be triggered even though by greening up again, I would have a net loss (which obviously happened). I did notice that the Automation tool did cancel bets for the first attempted Greening up at 17:14:31. If I remember correctly, there were multiple unmatched bets being shown in the Betfair web page's "Open Bets" screen. The only thing I can think happened was that the Automation failed to cancel *all* bets and the lay bet of 1.67 was not cancelled.

Can anyone figure out what is going on here?

Thanks,

The unmatched (greening) bet was probably matched between BA issuing the cancel/new greening bet, and those instructions actually arriving at Betfair. A cancel instruction takes iro 180ms to get down the wires and be processed so a lot can happen in that time. It happens and there's nothing you can do about it, fortunately it swings both ways and won't affect your long term numbers much. It's usually just another difference between idealised theory and the messy real world.

Thanks Shaun for your reply.

Do you think there could be a way to at least minimize this from happening? For example, increase the time between rearming? My initial thoughts was just to reduce the amount of times the rule to trigger from 3 to 2 times. I maybe wrong, but in this particular case if I reduced my rule to only trigger up to 2 times, I may have not had such a great loss which I did.
