Can a deceased horse's name ever be reused?

Anyone know the rules about if a dead horse's name can ever be reused, and if so, after how long?

Just wondering when looking at a selections historical (scraped) data if you can ever go back far enough where you might end up getting results of a different horse with the same name, is it something to be aware of?

TIA

Don't know the rules, but there are even many currently living horses running with the same name. Really screws up my database, cos I don't use brackets.

e.g. SIERRA NEVADA (1991)SIERRA NEVADA (2018)SIERRA NEVADA (FR) (2010)SIERRA NEVADA (GER) (2000)SIERRA NEVADA (USA) (2019)

There is also a protected list of some of the greatest horses. There’s no way there will be another Red Rum, Desert Orchid, Shergar, Frankel or Enable.

The protected list contains around 3,000 of the best horses but, obviously, the line has to be drawn somewhere. It means the names of some old favourites do pop up from time to time.

Outside of the winners of the top races, names of any horse can only be recycled five years after they have died. The timespan increases to 10 years for mares who have produced foals and 15 years for stallions.

When I was punting I had the horse's name and country of breeding in separate fields, but I once encountered a foreign horse with 19 characters!!

Could you use year of birth + country + name as an index?

It's bizzare that horses don't have a registration number like a sort of global Betfair selection id and still use these names as identification. Even pet dogs get a tracking number if they're chipped. I thought horses did to stop people running lookalikes.

A fair number of Betfair's IDs are duplicates. Don't know if it's their issue or the BHA's.

You're right. "in the style of...." might have been better. ;) I don't know what the deal is with theirs, I've seen some 4 digit Ids scattered amongst the long ones too.

Name and country should be sufficient as you won't get duplicate names within the same country it's registered.

There should be rules dictating song-title lengths as well!
