It seems extraordinary how China has contained the outbreak after the initial phase (assuming we believe the numbers).

Have any of you guys put German & UK figures side by side? Something doesn't seem right, Germany has around 5k positive cases and 11 deaths... the UK has around 1100 cases and 31 deaths. Surely this is backwards, I'm no mathematical genius but something about that strikes me as odd.
UK cases are only those tested in hospital. It may be that Germany are testing people who aren't in need of hospitalization.

Maybe Germany has a much better health system whereby people recover more often.
The average age of the UK population is 40 against Germany which is 49 - they're seriously outgoing us on fitness if they're healthier in general.

I read somewhere (which is not always to be believed) that a German company may actually have a vaccine & apparently the US have desperately tried to buy it.

Could also be the UK have more pre-existing conditioned patients, compared to Germany.

We're only testing people who are quite seriously ill, they like many other countries are testing people at an earlier stage and many of those don't go on to have a serious condition. If you only test people at death's door then the numbers look grim but if you test anyone with a sniffle they don't look so bad.

Sorry if I went a bit too deep, but I'd urge fellow forumites to stop arguing and conserve their energy for more important things :)
I don't think you went at all deep Kai ... we all need an anti-hysterical reaction from time to time. We think we are the bees knees species and that we can control Mother Nature but we haven't scratched the surface of what evolution can do ... and do against us. They say the virus will die off in the summer but what if the virus has had a shot of Darwin and has evolved to carry on through!

The Federal Reserve has taken emergency action and slashed its benchmark interest rate by a full percentage point to nearly zero and announced it would purchase more Treasury securities to encourage lending to try to offset the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Fed also said it will purchase $500 billion of Treasury securities and $200 billion of mortgage-backed securities to smooth over market disruptions that have made it hard for banks and large investors to sell Treasuries.

Welcoming the move, Donald Trump said: “It makes me very happy. People in the markets will be thrilled. I’m very happy they did it. I congratulate the Federal Reserve.”

One difference James will be how a country finds and counts it's cases. Test everyone with a cold will find more cases giving a lower fatality rate and same may record "died of CV" while others may record "died when contracted CV". They are not the same. Until we get a world standard for recording the stats the stats are not comparable.

Looks like the Chinese have been telling pork pies all along. The death rate is much higher than previously reported.
