Isnt that the reason why Italy is in sucj a mess. People were still going out to bars, clubs and restaurants, kissing and hugging when the government told them to stay at home ?jamesg46 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:53 pmThis has to be the greatest modern day social experiment or will become a modern day social study... we have got to the point where we check our last potential infection scenario, who we touched, who we kissed, who sneezed, who coughed.... wow, I think social behaviour is gonna change long term.

The self-employed are exempt!
So an employed person on £25k a year will be supported indirectly to the tune of £20k a year so their employer doesn't make them redundant, but a self-employed person will be entitled to nothing (unless they've got the virus in which case they'll be entitled to receive benefits worth the same amount as statutory sick pay - £94 a week!). All state employees will obviously get 100% of their wages, pension contributions etc. paid indefinitely whether they're a nurse putting their life at risk or a paper-pusher in a quango.
I think paying a temporary universal basic income to everyone would make more sense, be fairer and not be open to abuse (as this job retention scheme no doubt will be).

Hi, some news from Italy.
As you know we invited a chinese team in order to help organise the lockdown in Lombardy.
Well, one of their proposal is to check temperature of every person in the region in every house, like they did in Wuhan.
Once a suspected with fever is found, he will be "deported" by the autorities in a public quarantine structure.
I m not sure if my government will listen to this proposal, just let us die free at this point

I have never understood why there is not a rent cap in the UK, espeically in London.
Lived in holland and Norway for awhile and landlords can only charge a set rate per sq meter of space.
What do you mean by 'deported'?offlimit88 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 10:11 pmHi, some news from Italy.

But also we really feel for you in Italy, but average Joe has no way to help!
Hopefully that will change.
i don't know what the italian is for "we love you and want to help".
Thats my feeling.
Ah. Because it's an abject failure of a policy.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 10:12 pm+ 1superfrank wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 10:09 pmThe self-employed are exempt!

Britain did have 'rent control'. Privately built rental housing fell from 61% of all housing in 1947 to 14% in 1977. By in the 1970s, landlords would not upgrade housing, very little new housing was built, middle class horded housing with many instances of single 55-year-old ladies in 3 bedroom houses and it was very difficult to find housing. That was except for wealthy types as construction resources shifted towards luxury housing.
Same in Melbourne with rent control after WW2, no apartments were built for 9 years as a result. In Egypt in the 1960s housing was ruined with consequences still felt. Rent control restricts housing turnover as people don't want to leave their 'rent controlled' house even if they work 50km away. The implications are that it's difficult to access housing. For instance, waits for housing in Sweden can be years in Stockholm and other cities. Its a farce in New York and California etc.
