On Tuesday, European Union leaders failed to agree on financial tools to help countries in the bloc struggling with the coronavirus pandemic.
New data has since suggested a deep recession in two of its largest economies, France and Germany.
The Bank of France said that the country's economy shrank by about 6% in the first three months of 2020, the worst contraction seen since 1945.
In Germany, gross domestic product is set to shrink by almost 10% between April and June, five top economic institutes said in a report prepared for the German government.
That would be the biggest decline since quarterly record-keeping began in 1970, they said.
Coronavirus - A pale horse,4 men and ....beer
One hell of an headache to sort that one out, 27 different economies all wanting to protect their own best interests. I'd imagine some will be happier than others with any outcome & it could leave a bad taste in the mouths of millions.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 12:31 pmo dear...

You wonder what will happen when this is all over. Several states were starting to lean into the abuse of power and this is the perfect card to extend that.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 12:31 pmOn Tuesday, European Union leaders failed to agree on financial tools to help countries in the bloc struggling with the coronavirus pandemic.

Abuse of power? They're just trying to come to a common workable agreement. Certain countries will always throw their toys of the pram when they don't get what they want. Luckily for the UK govt the virus is masking the ongoing Brexit balls up because as usual they seem to only be able to manage one problem at a time.Euler wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 2:51 pmYou wonder what will happen when this is all over. Ditto all the other journos. She might be be marmite but she has access the others can only dream of. Interesting that the Tories rubbish the BBC when they're not getting favorable headlines but rely on them as the national broadcaster in times of emergency.

Yeah, those two are always the first to object. Thankfully it's a democracy of 27 members rather than pandering to the loudest.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 4:25 pmI think he was referring to whats going on in Hungary and Poland.

New data modelling shows Norway's current unemployment rate of 3.9% will rise to 19.6% by July 2020. Fcuk me, that's shocking for a country of that size...
I very much doubt that democracy of 27 will play any part in this bailout. I understand itll end up being a collective effort but the % of input into the package will have to be very lopsided, the Germans & French will ultimately be paying back the vast majority of the bailout in future taxes & we've all seen the issus in the past 12 months in regards to the French & their taxes. The Germans dont even want to contribute their fair share of GDP to Nato & then they're both going to struggle with their own declining economy's. I think this could stir up some tensions, I wouldn't want to be Macron explaining to the French people that they're likely to have a tax increase to pay for this.ShaunWhite wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 5:23 pmYeah, those two are always the first to object. Fair point. I'm afraid I'm of a generation that expects BBC journo's to expose stuff that needs exposing but also help the establishment project the right (best of the options) modus operandi. Tough job, but I suspect a lot on this forum would jump at that career opportunity.ShaunWhite wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 5:20 pmDitto all the other journos. I see Peston has been made to take down all his banners and branding in the background.

Germany have today set out new guidelines within their law to to restrict foreign investment... I'd imagine others will soon follow.Jukebox wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 6:19 pmBBC showing Wuhan survivor good news stories today, presumably to raise morale here - Then I look at the latest figures to see if we're really talking about the same thing
