We have around 82,000 soldiers minus 30% currently on active deployment available to help out. Obviously not carrying an SA80 or bayonet. ;)
I agree Archery but the sensationalist media would have a field day with "Army on the streets of Britain"!
Certain units of the Army are deployed in plain clothes and under the command of the Met Police. Although there not really there for mob/crowd control.

A bit of history.....

There was allot of speculation back in 2005 over the Jean Charles de Menezes shooting on a tube train. Turns out he was totally innocent.

- At the time, Professor Michael Clarke, Professor of Defence Studies at King's College London, went as far as to say that unless there had been a major change in policy it was likely that it was not the police who had carried out the shooting, but special forces:

- On 4 August 2005, The Guardian reported that the newly created Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR), a special forces unit specialising in covert surveillance, were involved in the operation that led to the shooting.

- An anonymous Whitehall source who provided the story stressed that the SRR were involved only in intelligence gathering, and that Menezes was shot by armed police not by members of the SRR or other soldiers.

- Defence sources would not comment on speculation that SRR soldiers were among the plainclothes officers who followed Menezes onto the No. 2 bus.

- On 21 August, the Sunday Herald reported that SRR men are believed to have been in the tube train when the shooting occurred.

There was also allot of discussion at the time about what type of bullets were used as his body was unrecognisable. :o

No Police Officer or Soldier (If they were there) on the tube train as ever been charged and/or prosecuted.

They were given an order and followed it.

lets hope they dont have to use them often. They killed an innocent - not a good advert for their intelligence gathering ability which would appear to be hopeless. :)

To be fair, they gathered the intelligence and handed it over to the senior police officer on the day who then gave the order.

Don’t know what the intelligence said. “Bloke with a rucksack” ?

Just goes to show that some people are above the law.

More of a Special Needs Reconnaissance Service. Last thing you need is a load of trigger happy squaddies patroling the streets.

People have had so many mixed messages from the government it 's hard to blame them popping to the seaside unless they're told not to. I'd guess it looks a lot worse than it is and most families are probably at least the recommended 1M away from each other. They're probably more at risk going the local Tesco.

Seen a funny picture on Twitter last week of a guy sat next to his car he'd just crashed into a sign on a roundabout just outside Barnard Castle and was waiting for it to be towed away.

His comment said something like "Thank god for DC advice, or this may have been far more serious if it had happened on my way to birmingham this weekend"

Major incident declared in Bournemouth.

- Beach totally overcrowded with virtually zero social distancing.
- Lots of punch ups.
- Illegal overnight camping
- Roads in and out gridlocked

And further a long the coast.

- Hundreds of rival youths trashing Hove lawns and fighting.

It baffles me why people head for the coast to bake in the sun, get sand in their drinks and be surrounded by potentially unpleasant people.
I have this mental image of a helicopter view of the uk with a daily migration from inland to coast.
Conversely, my local walk, under shady trees, around pleasant reservoirs are almost deserted.
But i guess you do have to acknowledge some people (perhaps a lot) are staring at unemployment over the next few months.
Who am I to deny them some pleasure now?

People are creatures of habit guess most are desperate for their beach holiday and lazing around on a bit of sand with a few cans appeals more than walking in some woods. At least they're outside with some kind of distancing , a couple of weeks time and everyone will be crowding into pubs which will be a lot more likely to kick off the second wave. Think we just have to accept lockdown, and any distancing, is effectively finished and we just need to ensure we take our own precautions now, every man for themselves.
