Russia seems rather confused because S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) units were deployed to the Crimea peninsula earlier this year. They are some of the most advanced in the world. While they defend against aircraft and larger missiles, the S-400s are protected by smaller SAMs like the Pantsir, delivering a two-layered defence system.
So how come Ukraine is being so successful so far in the area.
Well, the USA recently sent AGM-88 high speed anti-radiation missiles (HARM) to Ukraine. These can destroy the radars of SAMs and early warning anti-air systems, effectively rendering them useless.

I don't think nukes are on the table. If you were facing an opponent with equal ability to wipe out civilisation as we know it, would any sane person pull the trigger?
Problem is Putin (and me) has underestimated Ukraine and how willing the UN nations are to support them with superior weapons.
But the sword of damacles of nukes that hung over my early years until the fall of the USSR is now back.
With due respect to napshnap, there are better ways to resolve disputes.
I've been reading a lot and it seems to me like Ireland. Someone, somehow has to find that narrow channel in the conflict to a better place for everyone.
We could do with the equivalents of Mo Mowlam and John Hulme for Ukraine right now.
Winter can be very harsh in Ukraine. Many of his troops are cut off in certain areas as Ukraine has destroyed allot of its own bridges. Getting supplies to them will be near impossible. Once he gets large numbers starving, freezing and running out of munitions then he will be highly likely to do something severe. Will he drop a tactical nuke in the hope of bringing Zelensky and Ukraine too its knees ? No idea but he might. Question will be what would the west do if he did. No idea.
I think the big player in all this could be Germany, if Russia turns off the gas for 3 months many companies in Germany will go bust, not to mention people unable to heat their homes too. I think the Germans will do whatever it takes to protect there energy supplies, they got no choice. That could cause a massive split in the EU current united front.
But I don’t think Putin or Zelensky are going to listen to anyone.
