Can't believe the World Cup starts in just two weeks time. I can't remember a less enthusiastic build up to a WC
I was thinking exactly the same the other day when I heard someone say it starts in 3 weeks - I'd almost forgot it was even about to start
Same here! I've seen / heard very very little in terms of build up

I trust we'll all boycott trading the WC on moral grounds. :)

Actually Derek, just because the liberal West has legalised sodomy in recent decades, this doesn't mean it's not still sinful or as many view it, an actual crime against nature.

Most people I know quietly applaud the Arab and Commonwealth nations for their continued good standards of decency and adhesion to traditional values and the nuclear family.

Only astounding arrogance makes the British minority rights brigade think that they can dictate laws to an independent foreign power.

- My 'tuppence worth.

Why do they "quietly" applaud? Why not sing it from the rooftops? The simple reason is they are ashamed of themselves and know they will be outcasts, won't get a job, be allowed to enter a pub or be included in society.

Religion is your personal belief, you cannot impose it on others.

But for anyone wanting to protest, I suggest they bring back the word ‘gay’ to replace the word and meaning of ‘happy’ again, that should really piss off the Arab world.

- My two cents' worth.

It's you that has the minority view. I learned this from playing footy with 20-30 year olds. We had a gay player and I didn't know for years, but everyone else knew and didn't give two hoots.
It was the same at work. A colleague published an erotic lesbian book. Nobody blinked an eye.
I choose not to have my opinion driven by religion.
I'm agnostic, so I don't know the truth of the existence of God etc, but I don't take anything from any religious writing as gospel truth. I prefer to think for myself.

Sad to think people like you still exist in the West, at least the average Qatari has an excuse for their ignorance.

It's actually good to get the political and religious views out before the tournament starts, so that the focus later can be on the football and not on which orifice people find more enjoyable etc.

I hear some people making comparisons between this and Germany in 1936, when Hitler used the Olympics to portray his racist Reich in a positive way. Famously Jesse Owens showed him up by being black and winning four gold medals.
I was trying to think of a moderns comparison, a openly gay player wins the golden boot in Qatar......but I dont think we have any openly gay players who are likely to win the golden boot :D

Be interesting to see how they handle any football violence.

If theres no or limited booze the chances of any significant violence is greatly diminished I imagine

Lots of bars in Doha will be selling alcohol at 50% reduced rates during the WC. Pint of Guinness normally $12 but instead will be $6

Their asking for trouble allowing that to happen.

Reporters keep asking Qatar officials or politicians if gay men or women can hold hands in public. The question they should be asking is can they shag in their hotel room.

I think people are going to be in for a big shock, holding hands, shagging or any other sexual activity between same sexes is prohibited by law. You could end up with lots of people behind bars during and after the WC.

It’s actually punishable by stoning to death in public!!!!
