UK General Election 2024 (or 25)
Wondering who the winners will be on this Lineker thing will be. Lineker? He can walk away to a better paid job easily. The BBC? I think they've diminished their reputation by trying to muzzle Lineker and looking like govt puppets. The govt are now trying to step away and say it's nothing to do with us, which means its everything to do with them.
The thing I'm most pleased about is the rallying of support for Lineker's quite sensible and moral stance.

On Question Time, most of the panel supported his right to free speech but were appalled by what he said. I guess his co-hosts' may be supporting his views or just rebelling against BBC interference.greenmark wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 8:59 pmWondering who the winners will be on this Lineker thing will be. It's interesting to me that no-one has zeroed in on what he actually meant by suggesting the govt was using language like Germany of the 30's. Obviously we know the Nazi's ruled Germany from 1933 and had toxic policies from the outset but I'd like him to come out and be specific. I think I know what he meant, but it needs clarification for him to be properly vindicated.Derek27 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:28 pmOn Question Time, most of the panel supported his right to free speech but were appalled by what he said. Match of the day only on for 20 minutes. Should be like that every week.

The crazy thing is nobody knows specifically what he's referring to but they still criticise. It was only one or two sentences long!greenmark wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:46 pmIt's interesting to me that no-one has zeroed in on what he actually meant by suggesting the govt was using language like Germany of the 30's. Indeed. Its a bit like the desperate scenario a chicken farmer I knew described.... sometimes they all just pile on top of each other and we lose some in the crush.Derek27 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:26 pmThe crazy thing is nobody knows specifically what he's referring to but they still criticise. It was covered in the "Rest is Politics" podcast (Rory Stewart & Alistair Campbell)... The language of 30's Germany (and Italy) included such references as:greenmark wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:46 pmIt's interesting to me that no-one has zeroed in on what he actually meant by suggesting the govt was using language like Germany of the 30's. - we are being "invaded"
- migrants stealing our jobs
etc etc etc...
edit - take your point on Gary clarifying it but on social media likely to be a lose / lose situation
edit edit - the podcast company is actually owned by Gary as well )
Remarkably I've just listened to that in it's entirety. Can't say I agree with all of it, but it was at least an informed discussion of the issues.sionascaig wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 11:40 amIt was covered in the "Rest is Politics" podcast (Rory Stewart & Alistair Campbell)... Has it affected my view that Lineker is correct. No. But Rory bless him did make a very good point. The refugee crisis is global and needs a global solution.

Looks like Starmer is being advised to U turn the Sue Gray appointment after her son has been seen at a number of Sinn Fein appointments.
The issue here is not Lineker really. It's the fact that Braverman uses very aggressive language to gain kudos with a section of society. She is a clone of Truss, gobby and useless. The sooner she's sacked the better.
And that 30 pence tit uses language similar to whatever century it was in France: let them eat cake.

John Barnes has just hit the back of the net (or the nail on the head), stating the obvious, that it was all about language.
"The language used regarding the refuges is similar to the language used in 1930s Germany which it was. The language used creating this perception of unworthy refugees like the Jews were unworthy to be German and Germans were better than Jews. The language used towards the refuges coming over on boats in terms of them being rapists, in terms of them being criminals is different to the refugees coming over from the Ukraine"
Now, what does that remind me of?

Our prisons are disproportionately full of those not born here. And most of those came through many other safe nations but wanted to enter the UK due to our over-generous benefits and free NHS system, housing and schooling, and the hand-wringing liberal lunatics that continue to welcome all and sundry. Britain has become a criminal gang-run cesspit in many of our inner cities and the green hedgerows and polite English society that I grew up in during the 70s has ceased to exist in all but very few country villages and hamlets.
