The problem with bank runs is that they are self-perpetuating. The only thing you can do is inject confidence into the system. But why SVB stuck so much into long dated bonds at such low rates is a bit daft. Bankers never seem to learn, they just pull the same old levers.
Probably becuase unless they done something illegal then they always get away with basically financialy muder and someone else has to pick the pieces up. i.e. Central banks/Governments. Its all wrong they should be 100% accountable and face prison time. Some have but not many.

I understand the US regulators are fearing a run on small banks in America after this. Over the weekend the "larger" banks (JPM Chase, BoA, Well Fargo, Citi) etc. have been inundated with requests from businesses to open accounts for them, as they fear their smaller bank that they do their regular business with could end up as SVB did. And the larger "too big to fail banks" are guaranteed by the Fed
I guess this is how it starts...

It tickles me when a major company is sold for £1. The Wembley twin-towers fetched £5.50 if I remember correctly.

I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief!

I started buying BTC (for a long term investment not day trading) every few weeks over these last 3-4 mths and have now got half a coin sitting on an cold ledger, so todays been a very very good day for me - probably the best since I started buying it :D

Anyone know what bank Betfair's invested their money in?

That way we won't have to wait for an email from Betfair to to know the game's up.

Markets are running scared. My pension fund has taken a big nosedive.

Euro and Asia markets set to rally allegedly. It's been one hit after another the last 3 years

Y, last thing we need right now is a banking crisis V2

I was reading reports that the market pressure may scupper the ECB from raising rates by again 0.5% later today (Something that was being down played by the ECB)

If they do that could send them into a right tail spin this last few hours of trading this afternoon

I have been trading the 2 Year Notes in recent weeks in the US. The moves have been off the charts. Generally signalling that the Fed wont be raising rates to the same extent they predicted.

It doesnt take that much to start a banking crisis from what I can see. Its all about confidence, or lack of.

If a rumour goes about that your bank cant guarantee its deposits, what do you do. wait and hope its not true, or withdraw your money as quickly as possible?

I guess the solution is the nationalisation of banks where the govt guarantees all deposits. But surely this is a form of big government and socialism.

Banking is built on confidence as they lend your money to others. That’s always been the problem with banking is that it’s undone by bank runs, pretty much since the day they were created.
