Finland joins Nato Alliance, doubling NATO's land border with Russia

Finnish membership will double NATO’s land border with Russia, adding more than 800 miles. It will also bolster the alliance’s presence around the Baltic Sea and enhance its position in the Arctic.

To justify his unprovoked attack on Ukraine, Putin cited the possibility of NATO expansion. Now, his war has brought a bigger, stronger NATO to his door.

Still a scary guy but not because of immense competence but that he may not be under anybody's control. My worst fear is an individual or tiny minority in power over any population. As a teenager/ early 20's guy I concluded I didn't need to worry about world war, famine etc etc. By the time I was approaching retirement we would, as a species. have sorted this all out.

What a dick!

Don't you remember the early eighties? Newspapers and the media were banging on about it as though it was imminent. There was even an official government pamphlet/comic about it.

From what I remember, you remove three doors in your house, lean them together against a wall from the corner and fix them, cover the entrance with a curtain, put all your food, carefully planned provisions and a bucket to crap in inside, and then you live in it for two weeks.

I remember a colleague loaning me a video of "The War Game" which was a 1966 docu-drama about the aftermath of a nuclear strike on the UK (filmed in Barnsley I think). And it had the same effect on me as watching 1984 at the cinema. Utterly depressing and a relief once it was over. With 1984 I emerged from a Preston cinema into a truly foul, soggy, dreary, dark town centre and I thought "thank **** I'm here and not in the environment I've just seen depicted". "the War Game" was even worse as it might happen one day.

Yes News At Ten in early to mid 80s used to have a regular segment on the news where all the missiles pointed at NATO by Soviet Union were shown with graphics, we all lived with it and took it in our stride but looking back it was shocking stuff. I was very young then but remember it well.

UK sending 500 x Star Streak III Mach 4 missiles to Ukraine. Total cost is £50 Million. This new version cannot be jammed by infrared, radio waves or other anti missile defence systems. They will be sent in batches of 50 via different routes.

Any idea what percentage of Western military equipment actually makes it to the Ukranians intact?

I assume supply routes are being targeted by Russia?

I'm sure there will be losses but targeting moving vehicles requires good surveillance and fast communications, something Russia lacks.

In the first 6 months of the war only 40% was reaching its intended destination. Since then supply routes have changed including dummy runs and the estimate now is that 85% gets to where it needs to safely.

The four-processor RMP has 4 KB of RAM for each processor. Since the downloaded code runs from RAM, there is little space to spare, particularly for processors dedicated to seeker input processing and target analysis.

One might ask where Ukraine is storing all this hardware. Well they have over 400 miles of tunnels which during the Cold War were used to store nuclear missiles.

It’s been reported that 800 Russian soldiers are stuck in some of them as Ukraine has sealed some entrances and air filtration systems. So, over time they will run out of air, food and water. What a way to meet one’s end. 🤣

CNN is reporting that Ukraine is about to launch a major counter offensive against Russian forces using newly arrived military hardware. Another 24,000 Ukraine soldiers have now completed their training and been kitted out in Germany, Poland and the UK.

One analysis estimates that Russia has lost 130,000 personnel and $16 billion worth of military hardware so far including 600 tanks.

Jesus, how can you lose 600 tanks ? 😳
