it scares me that a lot of Americans find Trump's behaviour OK/acceptable. When I started looking at the markets I expected Trump to be quite a distance behind..... but the markets and polls have it very close in terms of final outcomes.
If you start digging into some of the polls its quite worrying how many Americans are backing Trump, its not so much those that have declared their voting intentions, it's those who refuse to engage in debate or polls, mostly the over 55s, apparently Republican leaning, non tech savvy individuals. Is there also a hidden misogynist or racial angle also involved? These 'hidden' intentions should worry the Democrats,
Harris does seem to be using Starmer's 'Ming vase' strategy, and the danger is she walks sleepily into defeat. She really needs to press home her advantages, start sharing some of her policy intentions and get those undecided onboard. Personality alone won't get her over the line.
Would be interested to hear the views of any of our American contributors/residents.
Interesting month ahead.
US Presidential Election 2024
I've heard a Republican say that Trump is an absolute lunatic but he's a good businessman (Taff15 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2024 11:51 amit scares me that a lot of Americans find Trump's behaviour OK/acceptable. I think anyone who wants a lunatic to have control of the US nuclear arsenal would have to be a nutcase themselves, but unfortunately, there are a lot of them in America. Still a month to go, and Trump seems to be getting more and more bizarre. The story about cats and dogs took me by surprise, hadn't heard it until the debate.

For all you US presidential election traders, there are reports this evening of gunshots "in the vicinity" of Trump.
The cynic in me thinks this was a stunt. On his property, in his vicinity. Suspect detained. Trump is rattled and about time too.

So apparently the would be assassin didn't fire any shots, and the shots fired were the Secret Service who somehow missed and the suspect managed to get back to their car and drive away before being apprehended. Either the SS are even more inept than we thought, or something else is going on here.
Edit - Just looked at the Conservative subreddit and some are even calling shenanigans on there, this timeline is weird!

Every time he is losing in the polls, someone tries to shoot him, Come On, It's not hard to see what's going on.
Trump is obviously paying them to get his ratings up or at least the press talking about him instead of Harris.

Doesn't seem to be working though odds-wise.MemphisFlash wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 10:39 amEvery time he is losing in the polls, someone tries to shoot him, Come On, It's not hard to see what's going on.

But generally this nutty approach to politics in the US is down to him. I'm not saying he deserves to be shot, just that if politicians focus on rhetoric rather than policy we're all a bit screwed.

The guy is from Hawaii and given his twitter posts a complete nut job. He been recruiting US citizens to go fight in Ukraine.
Trump still doesn’t have the highest security detail, his golf course is huge, no surprise really that someone got within 600 yards.
Many moons ago I got within 50 yards of Chequers, if I had a rifle at the time then I could have easily taken shots at the perimeter police and surrounding buildings.
If you have the right equipment, training and knowledge then you can take someone out from over a mile away. I think the current record is held by a Canadian sniper in Afghanistan at 1,800 meters.

Given the proliferation of weapons in the US it's quite remarkable it how few of these incidents there are.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 7:53 pmThe guy is from Hawaii and given his twitter posts a complete nut job. He been recruiting US citizens to go fight in Ukraine.

Perhaps the gun fans have a point. It isn't the number of guns, it's who owns them.
Also. AK47 at several hundred yards. Is that a realistic threat? I thought the AK47 was close range. The object being to spray a confined area. It isn't a snipers gun is it?Archery1969 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 7:53 pmThe guy is from Hawaii and given his twitter posts a complete nut job. He been recruiting US citizens to go fight in Ukraine.

Greenmark, AK47 does carry a large round of 7.62mm but considered inaccurate at distance. If you fired it at a 30 degree angle then it would travel for upto 1 mile ish. But on the battlefield its only accurate to 300 yards. Most snipers I worked with used .338 lapua magnum or .50 rifles. And for information both those are allowed in the UK by private citizens if you can show good reason. But there are only 5 ranges where they are allowed for target shooting. So if you live in London and the nearest range is 200 miles away then the Police will be highly reluctant to grant. There is no animal game in the UK for such cartridges. You could get one if you can prove you shoot large game overseas in Africa or such. But that would be classed as an exception to the Home Office guidelines on what the police can approve.greenmark wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 9:17 pmAlso. AK47 at several hundred yards. The race for the presidency feels like a joke. Trump is a serious threat not because he’s a traditional politician but because he says whatever he wants without caring about the consequences. He seems to operate on the principle that any publicity is good publicity. The fact that this race is even close speaks volumes about the quality of the opposition. In any other country Trump would be at 20/1 and drifting.
I saw an interview with a guy in a soup line in Detroit. When asked who he would vote for, he said Trump. When asked why, he said it’s because he’s lost everything and has nothing left to lose. Trump won’t actually help him, but he’s making promises to close the borders and get people back to work, with a job he gets Healthcare and a possibility of a roof over his head, but more importantly, Hope.
The sad reality is that once Trump is in office, he won’t give a shit about that man.
The wealthy and middle class have pretty much decided who they’re voting for. But the undecided voters? They’re the ones without jobs, those who are probably going to lose their job (probably lost their homes) or those worried they’ll lose their jobs to people coming across the border. These people don’t typically vote in large numbers, but if someone offers them even a glimmer of hope, that could motivate them to show up at the polls.
