I think beating myself up a little bit makes me less likely to forget what I learned. Not with a cricket bat, though!
As a punter, I never felt the need to go chasing after a bad bet. When I started trading the ladder, I succumbed to temptation a few times in the first month. No massive tilts, but unnecessary losses nonetheless - trying to take the lesson without paying the tuition fee.
That’s the sort of mood I was in the other night. I really didn’t think I was wired that way - I still find it surprising. But those outsized losses (compared to a typical green) and the thought of how many successful trades it will take to cancel out the red can lead to foolishness. I think it’s something that everyone trading as a beginner needs to be aware of and guard against.
