So today I had a lay bet on a dog at £12.80.

It ended up being a dead heat with two dogs crossing the line at the same time.

Therefore after reading the rules I should get half of my stake back equalling £6.40 right?

Well it paid out just £0.64! Surely that's an error!?

Am in the wrong here?

Here is the conversation with the stubborn so called "support" person:

Good Afternoon Stephen, hope you are doing well today! How can I be of assistance please?

Hi, the payout on my last bet isn't correct

It only paid me £0.64 and I was expecting £12.80

Could you please provide me with the bet information of the specific wager in question? This can include the BET ID, which typically looks like this: O/7383269/0000001, and is located at the bottom of each betslip.

You can find your My Bets section at the top right-hand corner of the website, next to your account balance. Simply click on this section, and your open bets will be displayed there.

That's the bet ID

Nayim at 15:29, Nov 29:

Please allow me just 10 minutes to have a look into this and get back to you.
You at 15:29, Nov 29:
Thank you

You at 15:40, Nov 29:
Any ideas?

Nayim at 15:48, Nov 29:

Apologies for the delay but I am currently still looking into this for you. Thank you for your patience, I will be with you shortly.
You at 15:49, Nov 29:
Thank you

Nayim at 15:57, Nov 29:

I've had a look into this for you and from what I can see the bet has been settled correctly due to the odds this was placed at. What I can offer from my end is a £15 Free Exchange bet as a one time good will gesture.
You at 15:58, Nov 29:
Okay thank you for the free exchange bet but I still don't understand how it only won 64 p from a £12.80

You at 15:59, Nov 29:
You have said it has been settled correctly but not explained why that this is correct

You at 15:59, Nov 29:
When I place a lay bet for a stake and it wins, I should get what I placed back as a win

You at 16:00, Nov 29:
You have only given me 5% back as a win rather than the full £12.80

Nayim at 16:00, Nov 29:

I've gone ahead and credited this for you now Stephen, should you wish you can have a look at the following link for more information on Lay Bets:

https://betting.betfair.com/how-to-use- ... 19-51.html
You at 16:01, Nov 29:
Yes, that page confirms my logic

You at 16:01, Nov 29:
"A lot of people prefer to lay at odds-on as liability is reduced. For example, if you lay a bet at 1.5 for £10 you are liable for £5 and will win £10 if the bet lands."

You at 16:01, Nov 29:
So in my case my £12.80 bet won

You at 16:02, Nov 29:
The liability was about £11.80 ish

You at 16:03, Nov 29:
You still haven't explained why I only won 64p of a lay bet that had a stake of £12.80

Nayim at 16:03, Nov 29:

I will raise this over further for you with the traders Stephen. Please allow me just 15 minutes to have a look into this and get back to you.
You at 16:04, Nov 29:
Thank you

Nayim at 16:16, Nov 29:

I've had another look into this with the traders and unfortunately the match ended in a dead heat and this is why the payout was as received.
You at 16:16, Nov 29:
So 2 dogs won

You at 16:17, Nov 29:
So the rules state that the stake is divided by how many dogs won

You at 16:17, Nov 29:
Therefore £12.80 divided by 2

You at 16:17, Nov 29:
So I should have won £6.40

Nayim at 16:17, Nov 29:

The payout was then calculated with the DH in place and this was the final payout
You at 16:17, Nov 29:
Not £0.64

You at 16:18, Nov 29:
" If a "dead-heat" between two selections is declared on any event, half the stake is applied to the selection at full odds and the other half is lost. If more than two "dead-heats" are declared, the stake is proportioned accordingly."

You at 16:19, Nov 29:
That's explained here: https://www.betfair.com/aboutUs/Sportsb ... ccordingly .

You at 16:19, Nov 29:
You have given me back 5% and not 50%

Nayim at 16:25, Nov 29:

As mentioned this has been checked by the Traders and it has been settled correctly as per the Dead Heat Rules and the calculations made with that in mind.
You at 16:25, Nov 29:
It hasn't!

You at 16:26, Nov 29:
Two dogs finished in a dead heat

You at 16:26, Nov 29:
My stake was £12.80

You at 16:26, Nov 29:
Therefore I should get half of my stake back

You at 16:27, Nov 29:
If 3 dogs finished in a dead heat I should have 1 third of my stake back and so

You at 16:27, Nov 29:
So one half of £12.80 is £6.40

You at 16:27, Nov 29:
And not £0.64

You at 16:28, Nov 29:
Surely after reading the rules yourself you can deduce simply that one half of £12.80 is £6.40?

You don't get half your stake back, half your stake goes on to each selection involved.

So if you laid £10 at 2.0 on a dead-heat then your profit is +£5 on the winning half, -£5 on the losing half = £0.

I suspect your 64p was a profit number, not a return? What were the odds?

Ah, well that wasn't explained to me.

The odds were 1.90 in a 6 dog race

So laying £12.80 @ 1.9 with a dead heat winner, returns -£5.76 on the losing portion of the lay, and +£6.40 on the winning portion of the lay. 64p profit is correct.

Thank you for explaining that to me
