General chatter about that dark and cold world of only back betting.

100 quid per one betting shop. So if I need to place 1k quid, I need to visit 10 shops. Sounds unrealistic. Waste of time:(
Are you profitable with bookmakers online ? Assume you're gubbed if so?

Yes, I am. Limited by all soft books a long time ago. Using exchanges and sharp books now. Just wanted to exploit betting shops to have an additional income. But after reading your replies, I have an impression that betting shops are just a waste of time nowadays if a couple hundred quid is a red flag for them.

I'm just guessing at the limits

If I worked at a bookies and someone was handing over £500 cash I would be suspicious

100 quid might be a bit more casual a punter that doesn't want it on their bank statement

I don't know how it works in UK,but I live in Italy and I am strongly in contact with the agencies and I know many of the owners, and some bookmakers like for example "coral" are also in Italy with a different name.
in short...
Each store has a different contract, usually there are two main ones, there are those who choose to earn from the lost money of the customers and those who earn on the money wagered, obviously those who choose the second option have a lower % of earnings.

So in the same way even if a store has a contract that earns on customers' lost money and you are a "winning customer" it might not tell you anything if that store already earns a lot,and as if it doesn't "feel" your bet.

So, to return to your question
you have two options.
1)Play a few bets and say whether it's a problem for them or not, talk straight and honest, I at least do that.
2)In Italy many people and I also do this, they send the bet via cell phone, and the betting store prints the bet as if you were there in person, this can prevent you from visiting many betting centers and go almost unnoticed, however you have to be very careful, it is important that you know the owner of the store well, and that he is reliable in giving you the money you are going to win, also you have to be careful that the store does not copy your bet, that is why as I said you have to find people you know well, because most will copy your bet if you are winning,Especially the guys

I speak to you from PERSONAL experience, I have several of them....

The other option would be to go in person, and change for example every so often the store where you bet,so that they don't notice you. Also because sometimes you might not find the same person, especially if the store is big....But this is a rotation that you have to do seriously because you will burn stores if you get it wrong, at the same time very stressful but anyway I'm just listing the options for you .

The limit of the bet depends on what you bet, the more popular it is the more you can bet obviously...this you will be able to figure out over time based on what you bet usually no one can tell how much you can bet however after a long time you can predict....
But still for example you realize that the maximum is 1000 euros on one event, sometimes betting 400/400/400 etc. on different stores but with the same brand works, there are many things to say and many variations..

Just a quick observation to the OP as I go to bookies quite often as I'm out and about a lot.

I go mainly to watch the markets and observe my back to lays on the exchange.

You mentioned spreading bets around by getting a team of people to put them on for you.......... those days are long gone.

There was a time possibly up to the 90s before computerisation when bets were manually settled. It was possible then to have a team of people going around placing £2 - £5 bets in dozens of shops in different towns. In those times it wouldn't arouse suspicion.

Nowadays with everything being computerised bookies at their HQ can instantly see their liabilities on every event. So in the past you wanted to back £1000 on a 33/1 shop you would have gotten away with it by placing bets in 200 shops.

Nowadays all the bookies need to do is set a low stake on each horse. After all most of their customers are 'penny punters'. Lets say they set £100 early morning on that 33/1 shot. If 20 people had a fiver the 33/1 would be gone and the next 20 may only be offered 25 or even 20. If those odds are taken then the bookies would slash the price to 10s. But their overall liabilty would not be massive.

This in opinion is why a lot of 'gambles' are bullshit. Don't be surprised to hear 'pundits' going on about a 'massive' gamble. Also don't be surprised for that 33/1 horse slashed to 10s to open at 16s and drift to 25s coming nowhere.
