I imagine lots of very intelligent people also fell for Bernie Madoff. Greed can turn off the thinking part of the mind...

The shocking thing about Madoff was his excellent credentials, I think many would have fallen for that. But these back of a fag packet scams are easily avoided.

City worker jailed after conning 140 people including his own mother out of £6m in football syndicate betting scam

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -scam.html

It's no wonder I can't get any traction for the work I've done in the last thirteen years.

I recently said on this very board that traders would sell out their own mothers for a ton of cash. Sadly this confirms it

What motivates someone to go on a trading forum and declare that traders would sell out their own mothers?

Words fail me...

Probably same as the guy that questions it, or the guy that questions the bloke that questioned it.Bit of time on their hands and bored.

Money is evil and I know where Zenyatta is coming from. In BKK we are surrounded by some of the worst. Some people are apparently worth in excess of 100mil and they have no boundaries. They would certainly sell anything someone is willing to buy. The banks are the same, the politicians etc.... "Honor is in the dollar, kid!"

No it isn't. Money is just an advanced form of barter.

I don't.

He is making a sweeping generalisation about a whole group. Doubtless some traders are evil - as are some waiters, and some truck drivers, and some HR managers. But most aren't. However, Zenyatta referred merely to 'traders', tarring them all with the same brush.

I was using a few quotes out of a few movies Jeff. " Money is evil" wall street I think and the "honor is in the dollar", boiler room.

Don't get me wrong Jeff I'm pretty good at bartering. I need to be living in Asia because everyone wants everything for nowt these days. Every day I have to get up and actually "make" money, not just move it around as the entire world seems to want to do these days. This trading is just my playground because tv is rubbish in the evenings.

I don't think zenyetta was making a generalization as he's already made clear that he is upset with just a couple of possible groups in other threads.

You can learn a lot from people's negatives in my experience.

I don't mean all traders. After all, I'm one myself ;) I'm just pointing out what can happen for a minority when greed is taken to the extreme.

Look, this guy in the article ripped off his own mother....

"Thompson's mother gave him £50,000 to put into the syndicate, while his wife Nina-Louise's family lost £300,000."

...

"Prosecutor Stuart Biggs told the court Thompson first started betting on Betfair in 2004 and thought he could 'play the system' to make big profits, but that as soon as the syndicate was set up he started losing heavily."

...

"But he was actually ‘useless’ at betting, losing between 73 and 91 per cent of all bets staked over a six year period between 2004-2010."

"The court heard how Thompson had deposited £4.1million into various betting accounts between April 2004 and October 2010.

He lost £3million of that money and withdrew just over £1million. The remaining £2million he held back from the accounts, he spent, the court heard.

Despite his heavy losses, Thompson still managed to live a lavish lifestyle, paying for a Las Vegas wedding to wife Nina-Louise and trips to South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

He also accumulated a fleet of luxury cars including a Mercedes, a Jaguar, a Porsche and a 4x4."

Fair enough - perhaps my response was a bit harsh. :)
