Not good scenes at all, it's like watching English football from the 70's and 80's

The authorities must be getting very nervous about the World Cup, as Brazil is a country with a very high crime rate, and a great deal of social unrest

Been there recently and everyone is worried about the WC. You won't find directions in English and almost everyone only speaks Portuguese. The most common second language is Spanish. Level of service is very low even in fancy expensive places. You can see infrastructures being built everywhere, but they say the Brazilian week has 8 days. The usual stuff plus tomorrow. And the best day to get things done is tomorrow

Somewhat like the Portuguese, I'm afraid.

Nevertheless, hope that all turns out great. Have lots of Brazilian family and friends (so in a comfy position to criticize) and think it's pretty cool that the nation with the most trophies gets to organize the tournament.

And may the winner speak Portuguese!

I would be amazed if some of those people who were attacked didn't have life changing injuries, some of them looked dead.

Heard reports last night that at least one person did die, but not sure whether it was confirmed. Obviously hope not. Lunacy though and was pretty sickening to watch.

I have no intentions of going to the football, but even if I was, I wouldn't feel safe taking my family there after seeing that..

Horrible stuff, I thought we had got rid of this a long time again. Bit bizarre that security wasn't allowed in the ground.

I had half contemplated going, but all things into account I don't think it's worth it.

Don't know why, but police is only allowed outside the stadium in Brazil, pretty bizarre law. The police there is military, that's why when they do come inside you can see them carrying big guns.

Don't be too worried though Peter. Just take a few precautions and you'll be alright. Fortunately the kind of people that did this won't be able to afford a ticket to the WC. Would be only worried only on the matches between south American teams.

For those planning going there and supposing a trip to Rio is on the cards, get the 'Rio for partiers' book. Found it on a flat I rented there and although I'm acquainted with Brazilian culture, had some pretty cool info. It will help you get a grip with the do's and don't's. Oh, and wear sunscreen!
