but -the cpu temp went down (on heavy usage) from +90c to around 40c.. excellent!! :)
Lovely

I had thermal throttling issues with mine and still not overly happy with the temps

It was a goddamn space heater before I power limited the CPU, they've lost their minds with hardware
I had terrible issues when running heavy duty processes that would run overnight. So much so that i'd havethe odd silent reboot, which was pretty annoying as some of these processes can run for 10-12 hours.

this was the unit i went for after research (i have a small factor case, so needed something that would maximise the cooling but still fit)

Can't go wrong with Noctua apparently, I went with the NH-D15 one

in a happy place today after replacing the cpu fan on my pc. was surprised at the size of the replacement (about the size of a small mini clubman radiator :))

I'd a similar problem when I bought my last pc kit. The fan was already fitted to the CPU but I was getting stupid high temps so ordered a Noctua cooler, about the same size as yours, 5in*5in brick!
It was only when I took off the pre-installed cooler that I saw the coolant paste was absolutely shite, it was more like a Nike tick than an even spread across the face.
Noctua coolers are like the Volvo of the PC world, they're bricky looking, but they protect you!

Yeah, seemed to tick all the boxes from my (ocd) research 😁

In my case, i think the stock fan/cooler was the issue, i.e fairly hi spec pc but crap (for want of a better word) fan.

Night and day change and amazing bang for buck.

Btw, agree with the volvo analogy!! and in truth, once the case is closed, no one knows its a volvo as its characteristics resemble that of a porsche (not that i'd ever buy one of those!!) :D

Can I ask, what software do you use to show the core temperatures?

Could overheating be a reason why my PC starts having mini 2-5 second freezes after its been in use for a while?

Depends what kind of use, but yes.

potentially, yes..

i didn't do much searching, but found speccy. it's detailed enough for me and coming from the ccleaner guys inspires confidence

https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

fwiw - i no longer am involved in BA, but do use my pc for backtesting/optimisation on cTrader. previously, this could end up in no go areas if my strategies involved tick level data and/or tick based analysis. as of today (literally), all of those issues have gone. i don't mind saying, it took me a while to grok the best way fwd on this and after several months of frustration, the fan/cooler replacement kept coming up as the bottleneck... never truer!

and yes, as Kai said earlier, cpu throttling occurs beyond a certain temp in order to protect the cpu from burnout - this can be solved with a minor $$ investment (£63 on amazon for mine) but with huge rewards.

[edit] as an aside. this evening (overnight) i will now be able to optimise 4 strategies in sync that would have been (individually) well nigh impossible prior to this upgrade; priceless!

[edit 2] - an often overlooked area is doing regular maintenance on the internals of your pc. a decent compressed air aerosol will be your friend here. literally cleaning gunk off of fans (without changing the stock fan) may be all that is required and will only need to be done every 9-12 months. in fairness, i did try this on my stock fan but the fan was so basic that it made little difference (tho my use case is akin to video editing and i was never able really to confidently complete the optimisation tasks to my satisfaction).

just wish i'd taken a few screenshots on speccy prior to my upgrade, my cooler upgrade really is THAT dramatic in the difference it makes.

Thanks for the replies Kai and Jimibt.

I'll download some software and see where I go from there!

Don't think I need to be so aggressive this week. And all for saving just a few pennies. :D

OK. I'm not aware my supplier (Octupus) do that kind of deal but I shall investigate as a result of your posts. Thanks.

Well I Just completed my Clubcard challenge at Tescos on Sunday and over the six weeks, I have just over £45 in Clubcard points to be sent to me, however I also have a freezer full of ready meals, cupboards stuffed to the brim with boxes of Cornflakes, quaker oats, Heinz sauces, Tilda rice and three cases of Pepsi. All will go but the lengths I go to for £45.

:D

All will be eaten by us though except for the Cornflakes and Tilda rice, these will be given to my neighbour who collects for the local foodbank.

At Asda, I'm just getting 50 pence per shop for November. Won't get much more than £12.
