How are they allowed to-do this during lockdown. Taking someone's temperature is not enough to makesure they are safe etc.

People will go mad, how come the government is allowing this ?

In Australia the geniuses in charge pay people on unemployment more than the people picking the fruit.
I believe the farmers here rely on backpackers to pick the fruit...so I would suspect they will be leaving the fruit and veg to rot on the trees also....
Note that I am not a farmer, so this could just be hearsay... it comes from my plumber

Where's 'here' John? In the UK that's mainly done by migrant workers and like I said in an earlier post, farmers in my area aren't even bothering to grow certain veg this year because the shortage of labour was already in doubt because of Brexit. Fruit doesn't generally rot on trees here, if there aren't enough pickers it just falls off eventually and gets raked up and goes for pig food.johnsheppard wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 12:01 amI believe the farmers here rely on backpackers to pick the fruit...so I would suspect they will be leaving the fruit and veg to rot on the trees also....

The govt pay people to pick fruit! Or do you mean the farmers only pay slave wages? I thought aus unemployment benefit was only iro $40 a day (about 20quid) surely pickers get more than that? Our pickers are on minimum wage, about £8.25/hr which is approx 3.5x more than universal credit which is about £14 a day.johnsheppard wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 12:01 amIn Australia the geniuses in charge pay people on unemployment more than the people picking the fruit.

If you're lucky enough to have some outside space on this sunny day, then this one would go well with your cool beer.
And the lyric could have been written yesterday.
Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the lonely out there
Raise your glass to the good and the evil
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Richie Stevens - Salt of the earth
and you could do worse than following it with.. "and if you're out there, somewhere feeling lonely.....you're not the only one"
Third World - You're Not the Only One

I probably should have kept my mouth shut, because I don't really knowShaunWhite wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 12:54 amThe govt pay people to pick fruit! Or do you mean the farmers only pay slave wages? This is what a 'jobseeker' currently gets...
https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/in ... ou-can-get
E.g. Single, no children, gets $565.70 per fortnight...
Since the corona virus is about they get an additional $550 per fortnight on top of that...
https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/in ... supplement
So approx $1100AUD per fortnight, plus there are other things like rent assistance which permit you to get a bit extra
I'm in Cairns, which is North Queensland (tropical climate), where they do lots of stuff but I think Mangos, Avacados are done in larger quantities than most others...After various expenses, to move to farms for seasonal work, I'd highly doubt there is any financial incentive to get off ones ass...I know I don't intend to go fruit picking any time soon

In comparison, say...Your average 20yo+ retail worker gets probably about $20-$25AUD an hour...
Edit...I think the idea is that if the government gives extra money to the unemployed (the corona virus supplement) they are the most likely to go out and spend it straight away...boosting the economy.... but when you simultaneously lock down many of the smaller businesses...who are ya really helping... there's a lot of issues there... (my personal inclination is to not like it, but there's a lot I don't know...)

There paying £15 per hour to pick the fruit and veg.
flipping hell, in the UK it's just £75 a week!johnsheppard wrote: ↑ This is what a 'jobseeker' currently gets...

So the Aus govt has boosted unemployment benefit. Presumably that because a whole new demographic of voter needs it now and what was seen as enough for people when someone else had to survive, isn't seen as enough now that they have to. Attitudes change when mean-spirited people suddenly find they need state help themselves.

Geez, that's a bit rough...pretty hard to live on that I would think? I got no idea of the costs of living over there (I don't dream of travel)...Derek27 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 12:25 pmflipping hell, in the UK it's just £75 a week!johnsheppard wrote: ↑ This is what a 'jobseeker' currently gets...

I'm in the UK, which is close to the arctic circle (currently enjoying one of the 8 days a year you don't need your coat on).johnsheppard wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 5:39 am

Well I am not sure that it's that. I'm not privy to the discussions that go on down at head office tho...The coronavirus was unexpected. Lockdown was unexpected. It's hard on individuals who have existing commitments...so I can sort of maybe see some logic there... but my initial thoughts was that it's the economists wanting these things...ShaunWhite wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 2:03 pmSo the Aus govt has boosted unemployment benefit. Do you mean to say it's purely a vote grabbing exercise?

I think most people who end up on unemployment had some sort of commitments before they found themselves in that predicament. Going from having a good job to unfortunately not having one was around before Corona. Our govt justify the pitiful assistance as 'encouraging people back to work', even if there's no job to go to.

I very much like Denmark's unemployment benefit system.
"Unemployed workers in Denmark get 90 percent of previous earnings for up to 104 weeks"
