Why was it easier in "the good old days"

here's a good quote which was from a renowned safety writer J Reason which i believe that is applicable to trading.

"The ‘edge’ is without necessarily having to fall over it. The ‘edge’ lies between relative safety and unacceptable danger. In many industries, proximity to the ‘edge’ is the zone of greatest peril and also of greatest profit."

Not much point in talking "good old days" when you have to trade the market thats in front of you today
