OK I will be brave and put one up here:

Lingfield 5:30 - Titus Gent

Back 20 Points @ 7.8
Lay 30.58 Points @ 5.1
Level Profit of 10.58 points or - 20

Wish me luck :)

Well that was a nice one, I actually traded this one twice as I was able to get out pre the off @ 5.9 and then I went back in again at 6.6 and out again at 4.2 so all in all a nice profit from that one :D

He did go onto win but at least 60-70% of my selections don't win but who cares if you can get matched ;)

This is how the trade went for you technical analysts: Chart 1 is just before the off, Chart2 is just In Play, Chart3 is the finish.

(charts taken off BetAngel)

Very interesting debate:

trading without knowledge of horses

verus

trading with knowledge of horses

how many opportunities do you normally find on an average day?

During the Winter when there is a lot of AW racing (this is my main area of trading)perhaps 3-4 races max

At the moment it may be only 1 or 2 (managed 2 today) both successful trades

Some days none

If you could specilise in the turf meetings then there would be many more but for me there are too many and it is hard enough keeping up with the AW so I am not intending to get into the turf just yet and if I do it will only be for a couple of tracks :)

perhaps that is where im going wrong, i choose at least 5-6 a day, flat races...

normally only 50% success rate which isnt quite good enough, but im going to try your method aiming for 50% profit or bust.

Have you ever been caught by Betfair not turning a market inplay or going down?

You would be unlucky to be caught if you are just doing 2 or 3 a day but I guess something to bear in mind.

Do you place your backs early in the day or just before the off?

So far so good with being caught out by Betfair but both back and lay is made pre the off so if it went down I would just have to let it run and hope

I play around with timing of the placing of the back bet as there can be some false prices in the market early doors, I tend to wait until an hour or so before the off and often closer (the crazy 15 mins when the scalpers are going mad can be a good point to enter as the prices can move in the right direction quickly)they can also come in and give a green screen pre the off if I have pitched it right ;)

Is AW handicapping not particularly tricky, given that you need to assess how form from various distances and goings will translate into (say) 5 furlongs of fibresand?

If the horse refuses to run, though, don't you lose your entire bank?

Hi Zenyatta

Is your thinking behind this approach that the market will generally move towards the horse's true price?

I think trading based on a sound knowledge of horse racing is far more effective (and much more fun too). Trades that are based on a knowledge of horse racing can and should be left In-Play.

The Timeform site might be useful, as it lets you know how low a horse went in-running in previous races:
