I've just roughly calculated that my average price (in the winners market) lay would be around 12.5

When those hit in a run, they still hit pretty hard of course!

Seems like you have found your sweet spot. I think that's the main thing.

I still don't know if it would be better for me to really try and max my profit on races. where I really like one or two. Back them and lay 5 or 6 one I think are weak.

If you have the skill to successfully read the form you may as well cash in on it.

Personally I wouldn't have a clue of the form these days but used to form read many years ago. Might revisit it after reading Patrick Veitch's book, the books boring and pretty much a list of his bets but does show the opportunities of putting in that effort.

I fell in love with trading because of not having to do the form :D . But realized that to be successful I need to learn the form of the markets so to speak.

I'm very much a 'hybrid' these days - half trader, half position better.

The one thing I do strictly though, is always decide which of those hats I'm wearing before I enter any market. Being unclear on that is a sure way to disaster!
