I will be 50 this August and feel wiser than ever, am still one of the strongest traders in football markets. Learnt a lot from my mistakes and still learning every other day. I agree that automation is the rising star in these years but doesn't mean that you can be a profitable HR trader without it.

Wow…. You lot are old!!! 😉
I was just thinking the same!

Having said that I'm surprised that Derek is only in his mid-fifties. I would have thought at least mid 70's :D

Sorry Dex :P

The question for me though is, can you beat the bots? When Betfair first started a few years ago, a manual trader only had to be better than other manual traders, now you're up against heavily botted markets, surely it's becomming a market where it's only really bot vs bot and the best bot wins?
There's been some serious quant guys around since the API first launched, making 7-figures for the last decade. They're not a new. And although a manual trader can never match a bot, a bot can never match a manual trader because they do totally different things. There's room for both.

Thing is Mobius, the fact Argos already existed didn't stop Jeff Bezos from opening a shop and look where he's got. ;)

If you are good enough, you are old (or young) enough.

Being the younger side of 40 (only just, hit it in August) it's a few years until I smell like I've wet myself (or smell like Derek, similar smell I understand).

Do what works for you, if that's manual then it's manual. Don't feel you "have" to learn automation just because you see it a lot. If you discover something in your manual bits which you'd like to automate then maybe spend the time to learn how to do it but don't feel like you've got to be forced to learn it just because everyone else goes on about it.

I have some automation for football & horses but my mainstay of tennis I do fully manually.
I could automate certain parts of it but for me manual suits much more with it dependent on my confidence with how successful a trade will be or not.

So don't let what everyone else chirps on about direct what you should do, do what works for you.

I would say that the markets get more competitive over time rather than anything to do with age.

IMO the golden days are past and it is harder to make money in the market now compared to 10 or even 5 years ago. New traders are up against traders with 10-20 years experience (and more bots) vs people starting 10 years ago when much fewer people were doing this competively.

It's definitely still possible to make a lot of money from this but it's not easy

Probably born 68.

Either sad or uplifting that its mid-night here, and I have nothing else to do (apart from NZ cricket/Aus races)

Still plenty of EV in these markets.

Would you say potential in UK racing has dwindled more than other markets in the last 10 years?

I seem to remember you once posting a P&L that was exceptional in different sports bar racing
