I have an opposite problem than you. I have a full time Mon-Fri job & a young family so I trade whenever I can but less than I would like.
My dream would be to give up the job & trade 6 hours a day, read and/or research 3 hours, drink/movie/walk or some activity/hobby for 4 hours, family time 4 hours and sleep 7 hours.
Trading can be a large part of your daily routine but it should not be the sole routine. If trading becomes the purpose of your existence then it becomes a problem.
Even if trading is your full time vocation you can only spend x number of hours on it and you should and must spend at least 30% of your waking time on non-trading activitie.

On one of my jaunts we flew from Brisbane to Melbourne, hired a car and drove the 1000k to Adelaide arriving late morning for a steamboat cruise on the Murray River. The highlight of and the reason for driving (we took 5 days) was to travel the Great Ocean Road between the 2 cities and soak up the small town atmosphere en route as well as visiting the 12 Sisters. A little known fact about the region is that there is a 30 minute time difference between Adelaide and Melbourne. Have fun.LeTiss 4pm wrote:In July, my girlfriend and I are going to Australia for 5 weeks. These sorts of comments really worry me! You really need to change the way you think about a lot of trading stuff if you want to be doing it professionally. The amount you make on each market is never exactly the same. There are so many different factors that affect how much you make. You can do exactly the same trade and one day it will work, the next day it won;t. The days the market conditions are good for you you make as much as you can and the days they are rubbish you struggle and get away with what you can get. Having a profit target for a day and then stopping is a bad idea.Ferru123 wrote:Why not set yourself a daily profit target, and knock off for the day when you've hit it?
Jeff
I've lost enthusiasm.
At the moment I'm doing ok but I still feel I don't want to be doing it anymore. The problem for me is there is no way I can walk into a job earning the same money as I do trading.
I will have to do something, I just wish I knew what.

Hi mate, Yeah I've thought about that, It's £3500 for the course and I'm not sure how long it would take to get that back from customers, especially round the Middlesbrough area.
I could do a gym instructor course (about £500) and try and get some part time work in a local gym.
I think a part time job would be the best answer, It would solve the biggest issue I have with trading. The antisocial part!

How would you feel about doing a job for (say) £9 per hour, knowing that you can earn more in a week from trading than you can in a month from the p/t job?
I'd have thought you'd quickly find yourself thinking 'Why exactly am I doing this?!?'.

Hi Jeff,
I've actually done that before, last year, probs about £7 an hour, I worked for Barclaycard and my trading was going great I worked 9am-1pm so it was ideal but then I had to start selling and I didn't like it so I left.
It's not really about the money (although extra is always welcome) it's about getting out the house and talking to real people!
The money can take a little extra pressure off, I was making about £600 odd a month from barclaycard and more a week from trading.
It is hard taking orders from someone when you know you don't need to.

I think if I did do another job it would be charity work or something, something community based. When I left my last job I hoped I would never had to go back to the same sort of issues I'd see in the past and I'm glad to say I never anticipate working for anybody else again. If I did, I think I would last five minutes. Some people enjoy working in and around the corporate politics but I never did. I just used to tell it as it was, because that's what matters at the end of the day. That doesn't work in a corporation.
The other option is maybe to join a sports club? You make some good friends, learn some new skills and get the motivation to chase a new goal. I've taken up golf again this year and it fits in quite well as I can get out and play early in the morning and still have the rest of the day ahead of me.

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it.
The overall opinion is I need a break and I did not fire up bad Thursday and Friday or look at this forum. I live at the seaside so I watched some of the punchestown races, had a few pints and a candy floss in pubs along the seafront that day tripper’s use. I have not been in them for years. Weather was wonderful. All in all a real easy relaxed couple of days.
I feel more positive but I am not firing up bad until late next week. I reckon by Wednesday/Thursday I will know if my apparent reawakening enthusiasm is real or just a flash in the plan (I have only had 2 days off after all).
See how it goes next week but if I trade the day cards then im not going to touch the evenings and vice/versa. Also im not going to trade Mondays and Tuesdays- well that’s my plan.
In July I have a family wedding to go to in Ireland and my cousin as been badgering me for a couple of years to spend a good few weeks over there. Today im sorting things out to have 4 weeks in Ireland as opposed to a long weekend in July. Not exactly as grand as LATISS 4PM tour of Australia (green with envy), but something to look forward to as long as the rain stays away…… im very glad you mentioned your Aussie trip la tiss, straight it away a bell rang in my head.
I think jollygreen you are near to the truth and the last 2 days as well as sitting in pubs having a few pints; I thought about things and have a couple of vauge ideas so thanks for that.
As you all know trading is a solitary business, you get no feedback from others, none of my friends and family understand it, they are all clueless, I no longer try to explain or talk about it to anyone I know, it just gets frustrating trying to explain things. So once again thanks for the feedback, I really needed and appreciated it.
Kind Regards Tony.

Hi Tony
You could always try out some of the meditation techniques in that book. I actually did some sustained meditation myself this morning for the first time in ages, and you forget just how refreshed it makes you feel! Just a thought...

hello jeff,
i still do especially if i start flagging half way through a session. but a deep long term malaise so to speak, requires in my case something more than 2 to 3 minute meditation tricks, to put me back in the correct frame of mind longer term.

I can relate to this - I have been trading for a few years now, there is one thing that keeps me going more than anything else.
About 18 months ago I thought I would do a bit of research into in running opportunities. This has led to a push into watching markets from a completely different angle and developing new ideas and ways to make money.
Trading is still what I do, but the research and findings I have made excite me and fuel my enthusiasm much more.
If you can afford to, take 1 day or just 1 eve/aft per week to watch markets in a different way - dont trade, look for ideas.
There are lots of things going on that I didnt see when just trading.
