There are allot of thick people around with no common sense whatsoever. I imagine many of them are loving the furlow scheme and don't want it to end. Its like having a special unemployment rate. I am surprised those who were already unemployed dont seek a court review into why they dont get the same rate based on previous employers earnings instead of £75.00 per week on UC. My opinion is the scheme has got to end as its costing way too much money to the tax payer. I suspect many companies were not viable leading upto the disaster and will fail at some point anyway. Would make more sense to double the UC rate to £150.00 per week and let the unemployment rate double or treble with hopefully a bounce back in 2021.
When UC was first introduced, it was designed to combine all elements of the benefit system. It "works better" if someone was already in employment and needed a top up. This was one reason why the application number shot up as the govt scheme only gave 80% of the wage earned.
The UC amount for a single person, renting, without savings, without a job would be around £750 a month. They could also get an advanced UC loan payment as it takes up to 5-6 weeks to process. (prob longer ATM)
There will always be some form of welfare scheme if UC was abolished, the taxpayer will have to foot it either way. It doesn't seem to be answer as it has cost more to roll out than actual payments made since its' inception.
