Ukraine has destroyed two S-500 hypersonic air defense systems before they started launching.

I thought the S-500 was still in development. I've often wondered, however sophisticated these anti-aircraft weapons are, they must be vulnerable to enemy aircraft when transported into position and vulnerable to long-range rockets and artillery even when in use. According to Wiki, they cost $600M per unit.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 7:48 pmUkraine has destroyed two S-500 hypersonic air defense systems before they started launching.![]()

The first S-500 regiment went on combat duty in October 2021.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 9:23 pmI thought the S-500 was still in development. Both units in Ukraine were taken out by HIMARS rockets fired from 80 miles away before they were operational. They were being tracked by the Bayraktar TB2 armed drones supplied by the Turkish contractor. Which is suprising because I thought Turkey was Putin's friend.

I think sooner or later Putin is going to find himself in a corner. The S-500 was supposed to be his jewel in the crown so to speak.

Yeah it's bad but nowhere near as bad as losing his prestigious elite 1st Guards Tank Army with this Kharkiv counter-offensive, or having to tell his people that the flagship Moskva has been promoted to a submarineArchery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 9:48 pmThe S-500 was supposed to be his jewel in the crown so to speak.![]()

Turkey is a slut who would sleep with anyone. On one hand they're part of NATO and assisting Ukraine, on the other they want to purchase the S-500 system from Russia. Quite ironic when they helped to destroy them.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 9:48 pmThe first S-500 regiment went on combat duty in October 2021.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 9:23 pmI thought the S-500 was still in development. Yeah, i really dont understand what Turkey is upto. The reason they were invited to join NATO must have been from a purely strategic point of view given their geographic location.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 10:22 pmTurkey is a slut who would sleep with anyone. But I dont thiink they could afford the S-500 as they are in a right financial mess. Although, to be honest, not sure I would want the S-500.

Glad I am not in the Russian army, this video just about sums them up, leaving injured comrades and legging it.

Personally think it's good to have someone like Turkey who can play both sides, whilst predictably always serving their best interests. They are often in a unique position to do some actual diplomatic bridge-building, like with the much needed grain exports recently.
Historically too, they were often used as a cultural and diplomatic bridge between West and East.

If I was ten metres away from a comrade who gets blown up, I think I'd run like fuck away from the blast, take cover if possible, and then go back to see if he's got any fingers left (over). In fairness, the footage only shows soldiers running away from the blast, you won't know if they went back later.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 10:52 pmGlad I am not in the Russian army, this video just about sums them up, leaving injured comrades and legging it.![]()

The guy is an Air Force vet who served as a Nuclear and missile operations officer, so a fitting narrator if you ask me

Question for the experts:
Why is Russia allowed to launch missiles into Ukraine but nobody wants to give Ukraine the ability to launch missiles into Russia.
Hardly seems fair to me ?

Me neither, but I'd assume the risk of escalation due to NATO involvement.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:37 amQuestion for the experts:

MY worry now is having the Putin bear backed into a corner. A man with nothing more to lose, with his finger on nukes is a scary proposition.
