Hi All
I'm JP, I'm a newbie and this is my first post, I've been trading horses for about 4 months.
Just wanted to ask, when betfair does go down like this, how long is it usually out of commission? An hour or two or can it be much longer?
Also is it worthwhile trading horse racing for example once it's back online, or is the rhythm of trading / liquidity upset for the rest of the day, much like you guys heading off for a few pints?
Also would be interesting to know how you guys who've dealt with this many times the betfair site or even the API going down, deal with closing out positions as best you can?
Do you have spreadsheets that help you work out roughly the calculations involved, then get on the phone to betfair, something like you've mentioned above?
Would really appreciate it if you could share what works best and fastest!
Finally do betfair ever compensate traders for issues like this!!
Cheers,
JP

I was luck I had, had a good run on the 4:00 and greened about 3 minutes out. I don't know if I will get paid out. I won't be to unhappy if I don't, if all bets are void as I have been on the other side all to often.
betfair never (very very rarely) compensate for their site fecking up. its your problem as far as they are concerned.
if it comes back today best leave well alone for today as quite often there will be hang ups, and crashes and slow/sticky api for sometime - bit like after shocks with earth quakes.
probably best to miss for a couple of days and use much smaller stakes until you are confident (if you can ever be truly confident with betfeckup).
why would you need to have a spread sheet? if your going to ring them, you should know how you stand and just want to get out quick. you probably will not have time to mess with a spread sheet to work exact red/green stakes. plus the moron at betfeckup will not know what your doing or talking about for that matter. just get out as quick and as best as possible given the time and the moron you have to deal with.

Thanks Herbie and Onemichel for your replies.
Thought I'd lost a few quid on the 4pm at Southwell due to the outage, but I was actaully +€6, so my bet closing trade must have got taken even though it appeared not to
to75ne regards a spreadsheet I guess I was thinking about calculating a green out of you position quickly if you are doing well, but you make a good point just getting out of your current exposed position is crucial, so keeping it simple for call centre staff makes perfect sense.to75ne wrote:why would you need to have a spread sheet? if your going to ring them, you should know how you stand and just want to get out quick. you probably will not have time to mess with a spread sheet to work exact red/green stakes. plus the moron at betfeckup will not know what your doing or talking about for that matter. just get out as quick and as best as possible given the time and the moron you have to deal with.

After many occasions of getting caught with the site going down I got into a habit of sticking in a closing trade past where I expect the odds to go and TAKE SP. Then cancel that if i need to or move it. I any case I always have a safety net. Obviously this only works with racing. Football is a different animal, and trading with large amounts makes for a scary ride.jpoc wrote:Hi All

It works most times, until Betfair forget to put a race in-play that is and your bet is matched by another punter and then voided for being matched after the offical off time, as i have found out to my cost in the past

I had my bet voided in similar kind of circumstances and took them to IBAS and they paid me back my full amount as a 'goodwill' payment before IBAS gave a ruling.
Not sure why others don't do likewise instead of running scared of Betfair.

thanks Andy good post.. thanks for the comment.. It's just beyond me that betfair dont have some kind of process in place so their staff know how to deal with the situation....it cant be difficult to publish some guidelines for us and the staff... I have less hair today

Just to be clear I got my money back when they were late turning a race in play and they voided my take sp bet. It wasn't when betfair crashed.
They really are a shocking company for contingency planning!
