I went to school in the 1980s when homophobia was rife and it was normal to crack obscene jokes about gays. I'm now worried that if I ever achieve anything worthy of having a statue of me erected my past will catch up with me and the statue will undergo public humiliation.

Agreed. Just been fuming about that. Good grief are we so fragile that we can't even laugh at bigots.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 12:51 pmJesus, at this rate i may aswell do away with the TV.

I watched a rerun of Faulty Towers a few years ago and the German episode was the one episode that I had to watch again. Even German people find it hilarious, according to John Cleese when he was in Germany.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 12:51 pmJesus, at this rate i may aswell do away with the TV.

I'm seeing overreactions everywhere I look. The whole trend has some legs to it.greenmark wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:07 pmAgreed. Just been fuming about that. Because pretty much all humour offends someone? So there's rich supply of stuff to ban to make a point that everybody already gets?Kai wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:14 pmI'm seeing overreactions everywhere I look. All this is going to create a backlash and fuel right wing extremism.
What's next 'Only Fools and Horses' ?

The really bizarre thing about this is that, if George Floyd wasn't murdered it would be fine to watch Gone With The Wind, Little Britain and there would be no urgency to remove Colston's statue, the campaign to remove it would go on for another year, while dozens of other slave trader's statues would be acceptable!
I think it's mostly just to appease the rebellious masses, the equivalent of kneeling if you want, seen many police chiefs and people do it but the trend that started with Colin Kaepernick is beyond lame I feel.
That is what they want, for everyone to "kneel and repent for their racist sins". Probably so that they can club you over the head and loot your shit.

Well I worked with a German (just the one) and she thought Fawlty Towers was hysterical because Fawlty is a bundle of neuroses and bigotry. The anti-german stuff didn't even enter her head. The guy is an idiotic basket-case, thats the joke. There's probably stronger claims to ban it because its depiction of people that are borderline mentally ill.Derek27 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:14 pmI watched a rerun of Faulty Towers a few years ago and the German episode was the one episode that I had to watch again. Exactly. They've mistook who the joke's on. Just like the Little Britain guy in the wheelchair wasn't disabled, he was just a lazy git, who will probably be the next group of people deemed to be offended.greenmark wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:49 pmWell I worked with a German (just the one) and she thought Fawlty Towers was hysterical because Fawlty is a bundle of neuroses and bigotry.
