Hi
I was practice trading the pre race horse market today. I am trying to learn the ropes at the moment. I noticed in several races the prices suddenly jumped suddenly in one direction, seemed to jump over several ticks in the market (5-10) ticks. So it wasnt like a quick drift or steam it was more like the system slowed down momentarily or something. Could this be API or a server issues?. I never lost my own connection during this happening. I was thinking at the time this would be really worrying if i was using large amounts of money and the price was so volatile
thanks for any assistance

I had the same expirience today - was very hard and frustrating to trade.
I also noticed some stickiness around 17 (I'm on dedicated fiber optic, so I guess this wasn't the problem).
Was recording the whole session, so I can put a video online that shows exactly what you describe...

Here are a couple of situations that you describe :Archangel wrote:Hi

I didn't find the situation where the price shoots down for cca. 6 ticks and the next second 12 ticks up, but I remember it happened during the day

Any ideas what's causing this?

Yes this is exactly what I was experiencing. I dont know how the price would ab end like that, seemingly to skip over prices without being filled in between. But yeah, thats a great exampleandrejt wrote:Here are a couple of situations that you describe :Archangel wrote:Hi

This looks totally normal to me. Its when someone puts an amount of money in the market to be matched that's bigger that what's available at the nearest tick. So it wipes out the next tick and anything else above/below until the full amount's matched. All in one fell swoop!
Any how do you deal with this situation if you have an open possition?AmazingMisterX wrote:This looks totally normal to me. It must be very hard to deal with a market that gaps in any direction. For example you could be in a trade, have a stop loss in case it goes against you. In this situation the price could quite easily jump your stop loss at which point you would be scrambling for an exitandrejt wrote:Any how do you deal with this situation if you have an open possition?AmazingMisterX wrote:This looks totally normal to me. The thinner the market is, the less money available on both side, the more likely this is to happen.
But when trading thinner markets it often makes sense to bank a bit of profit to insulate yourself from a suddenly move against you. Either that or looking for a strong directional bias and then stick with that trend and just accept that you will get pullbacks like this.
I'd say a lot of traders lose money because they they take a lose on these sorts of moves.
