That's a bit of a generalisation! :)

How have English clubs mismanaged their financial resources?

Here an example.

The top top players in Spain earn more then top top players in England. Many top players are not coming to play in Italy because they have to pay higher rate of taxes compare to Spain and England. Those 2 countrys became top players first choice for bigger money resources and less tax to pay. That is what I meant..

I don't speak Italian, but I'm not sure I see the connection with the Premier League!

If you mean top 3, then I agree. But there are probably as many Premiership players in the top 20 earners as La Liga players (I can't be bothered counting! ):

BTW, when you take endorsements into account, David Beckham is the world's highest paid footballer.

Hi, Jeff
Interesting list. I heard somewhere that CR7 and Messi made 30M and 25M last year in adverts and bonuses. I feel sick really when I look at the list...
Fernando Torres 10M a year...what a waste of money.....

Football has lost a grip of reality with those wages. The future for the game is bleak, because these spiralling wages need to recouped somewhere. It's ultimately us the fans that pay, but that loyalty can only be stretched to a certain point. Once that elastic band breaks, many clubs will be bordering on bankruptcy

Sick with disgust or sick with jealousy? ;)

I think Torres is a bit of an 'all or nothing' player, and he's been unable to get into the right state of mind to play brilliant football in his time at Chelsea.

Veron was the same when Man U got him. We spent something like 30 million pounds on him, thinking he was the greatest midfielder in the world, and he was completely average for us!

I don`t disgust money, ofc I am jealous..
Torres wage worth 8M in 2008. If Chelsea agreed with his contract back then for 10M, is something I can understand, but after Euro2008 Torres has done nothing special. This an example of wasting the financial resources. Ac Milan did get rid of KaKa when they soon realized Kaka had some real form issues to sort out. They made a big pubblicity about Kaka going to Man city and agreed with his transfer for 67M euros to real madrid. Only now we are starting to see Kaka playing good again after 2 years in the dark.. I have plenty examples of rich clubs buying broken players. I am still wondering how Liverpool hypnotized Chelsea to make then pay the most expensive transfer in english football history on Torres worse form ever.

You shouldn't be - the only wealth that really matters is happiness! :)

BTW, here's some interesting analysis on the top 100 earners in football: http://www.visualevolution.co.uk/infogr ... 1-edition/

And I don't know what possessed Liverpool to pay £35 million for Andy Carroll!

He had one good season at Newcastle, he's not even good enough to make it into the England squad, and he has discipline issues (including drinking too much and attacking his girlfriend)!

And since starting at Liverpool, he's scored 4 goals in 16 games, which is OK, but not what you expect for a player who cost that much!

A crazy, crazy decision!

Not sure I would have bet on Arsenal being top of the group and first team through the champions league group stages.

United should progress, they just need to avoid defeat against Basle - at least their fate is in their own hands.
The bitters on the other hand have a tough game against Bayern who will do them no favours (Rummenigge has stated they want to win the game and knock City out, despite having qualified) and I wouldn't expect Villareal to pick up any points against Napoli.

Everybody says Manchester United should get through and they are 1.18 on Betfair.

I have bet on FC Basel, because they as good as Liverpool currently, and I wouldn't fancy their chances against Liverpool in a do or die game at Anfield.

In their own league they are top and won all their games since drawing with Man Utd.

To me the odds just look wrong. Man Utd have 3 matches before the Basel match, whereas Basel have one easy home game against Lucerne. So, training and playing at home only, they will be well ready for the Champions League decider.

The CL does level things out, city getting beat by napoli was a joy, and what chelsea are up to I don't know.. But I have heard a rumour that they have secretly offered 50 million for that other in form Liverpool striker Andy Carroll, to clinch the title... did'nt someone mention waste of resources... :o

In that case, Liverpool should accept, before whatever Abramovic has been smoking wears off! ;)

It's possible that, in a few years time, Carroll will join the likes of Christiano Ronaldo, Messi and Kaka as one of the greats of the modern game. If you were laying odds on that, I might consider a small dabble if the price was 300.0 or over...

I apologize for the delay of posting about the champions league. For anyone who has missed this game here the highlights.I will not comment on the penalty, I will leave you to judge. The Barcelona played better then AC Milan still deserved the victory. Milan on his side did not disappoint expectations, and both gave birth to an incredible spectacle for the sport of football. The 2-2 goal was a pieace of magic. Enjoy
