What I'm curious about is whether updating the thread periodically actually gives you any extra motivation or sense of accountability etc, or has it become more of an annoyance and hindrance?

I update very occasionally, eg end of year, or when I want to add something relevant that might motivate others, or for completeness of the thread.

My main lack of posting reason is I think it would likely annoy and not be very useful for others, especially as my automation is not BA based.
