All those stats say is that, like just about every team in the world, Man U play better at home than away! :)

Euler (who AFAIK isn't a Man U fan!) addresses the question of whether United get awarded more penalties on his betting stats page (http://www.probabilitytheory.info/conte ... ball-match):

I looked at a season recently when Man Utd won the Premier league and sure enough they were awarded more penalties than there opponents. However, so were the Scottish champions Rangers and the winners of the other leagues. This seems to indicate that teams that are playing well and near the top of the league are going to be awarded more penalties on the basis of their attacking force and / or the opponents defensive weakness not because of any specific bias. As a control we correlated penalties and league positions and this seems to confirm this bias. Teams get awarded more penalties because they are stronger in attack.

So there! ;)

You should know better than that Jeff!

Yea Jeff,

I read that as well - however, it doesn't explain why away teams don't get penalties at Old Trafford.

Anyway, since the instigation of the Premier League - Manchester United have been in the top 3 away teams every season. Not in 2010/11, where they were only 5th. Yet, their home form is phenomenal (better than even Barcelona or Real Madrid) - may be the referees (and Officials) are too scared now to give the correct decisions at Old Trafford.

It could be that referees don't like giving penalties against the home team.

You don't see many away penalties being taken in front of the Kop...

...assuming he has a sadomasocistic streak! ;)

But if you want to support a club with an almost unrivalled history that keeps needing to build new trophy cabinets, there's only one logical choice!

I see United are already available to back at 1.81 to win the Premiership.

Their form so far has been phenomenal, but I wonder if it's a bit early in the season for them to be odds on, particularly given City's form.

What do you guys think?

I'm suprised Patrick Power or Bet Red (Fred) has not paid out yet!! I think it is a bit early yet to be so short. They have been pretty impressive; be it a bit of "track" bias at home, luck, intimidated Refs or whatever. They do not usually start so well so whether or not they will struggle (injury wise) as the season pans out it will be interesting to see. Remeber Chelsea last season hit everyone for six then fell apart. Man City v United will be the one to watch!

I don't see anybody that looks like they could put a good enough team together to beat United but that does seem a little short. Chelsea were even shorter this time last year!

Torres played well yesterday, just a shame he did a "rosenthal".

I suspect Torres is an 'all or nothing' type - he's either in the groove, and world class, or about as useful as a traffic cone on the pitch!

He reminds me of Forlan in his Man U days.

Yea I'd agree with that and although confidence plays a huge role in performance I'm not really buying into the standard pundit reaction of "a confident Torres hits the target there". The period of time in which he's been inconsistent now is too long imo to be blamed solely on low confidence.

He did play well yesterday though.

Caught a funny headline yesterday when I nipped into the local shop. Saw the back of a paper and it read something like 'Wenger seeks to plug leaky Ars". Couldn't stop laughing.
