I once told the receptionist I was coughing up blood when I had a cold and they were fully booked. She ran me back when there was a cancellation to book an appointment. The doctor prescribed me antibiotics and instructed me to go to the hospital for a chest x-ray. I took the antibiotics but didn't bother going to hospital.

I did actually think I coughed up blood but I'm sure I would have realized if I thought about it that it came out of my nose as I coughed, which was bleeding at the time. :)
I thought you were going to say you had eaten pickled red cabbage.
Last time I tried to get an appointment. Day 1 I phoned at 10am and got a recorded message that there were no appointments avaiable. Day 2 I was on the phone from 8:00am. Got through at 9am and was told they weren't taking appointments for that day and I couldn't book one for a future date. The only way to see a Dcotor was to turn up and queue.

As far as I am aware it’s a combination of:

- Brexit
- Retirements
- People living longer but with chronic illnesses
- Leaving due to severe workloads
- Salaries
- Moving to private sector in UK and abroad

Funding possibly is another factor but record sums are going in so it could well be mismanagement.

But the NHS is now so big compared to what it was originally designed for its no surprise that managing it is a major issue.

I read some medical journal saying it needed another £90 billion per year over the next 8 years to clear backlogs and get the GP system back to acceptable levels.

So, the country needs billions here, billions there, billions for pay rises, billions for levelling up, billions for Defense, billions for education, billions for infrastructure, billions for climate change and billions for sorting out long term energy plans.

As I see it the UK doesn’t generate anywhere near enough revenues for all or part of the above. No chance.

The country is leaving well beyond its means by a massive margin. As the countries population becomes older and less young people working then things will become dire.

Someone or somebody needs to come up with a short, medium and long term plan for the country with some unpopular decisions to be made.

It’s just like personal or household budgets, if you can’t afford something then it needs to go.

... and a complete indifference/couldn't care less attitude.

War in Ukraine is an emergency and requires immediate action/funding. So did the covid crisis and people being unable to work and pay taxes. They're beginning to realise that people starving/freezing to death won't look good for their record in office, but people in severe pain and pulling their own teeth out because they can't see a dentist, that doesn't seem to bother the government, they can all afford to go private.

In fairness though, the dentist situation wasn't any better under Labour.

They tried it back in the 50's after the birth of the NHS but the cost proved prohibitive, so went for the discounted model.

I've rebooked my appointment for next week, but with Truss getting 66% of the votes so far, according to a poll, I can start to relax about it. :)

They reckon Truss is on 66% with Sunak on 34%, if you believe polling.

I think its more like 55% v 45%, so maybe Sunak can turn things around if Truss keeps putting her foot in her mouth.

It's what Truss isn't saying (about the energy crisis) that's worrying people, but strangely enough, not the Tory members.

Problem is most of the votes will already be cast so no matter what either say or do now it will likely have limited impact on the price
If it isn't already the price will soon be driven more by those with some sort inside info on the votes so far cast

The Tory membership are mostly white and well off, so they wont be worried about the energy crisis or anthing else affecting the unwell off.

A bit of uninteresting history about her:

- Attended Meton college, Oxford
- President of Oxford college liberal democrates
- Joined the conservative party in 1996
- Worked at Shell and Cable & Wireless
- Deputy director of think tank Reform
- Describes her parents as being to the left of Labour
- Had a well documentted extra-marital affair with MP Mark Field :o

The odd thing for me is she has served Cameron, May and Johnson. So in that world she is percieved as competent. MP's weren't quite so enthusiastic as the Tory members seem to be though.
It would seem she's the next PM, then we all hold our breath while her true ability is revealed.
Anyone want to take a punt how that will play out? :-)
Joking aside, I sincerely hope she rise like a phoenix from the current wreckage of Conservatism. Good grief we need someone to sort the problems out, don't we?

Personally, I think she will be a disaster. Having said that, whoever the next PM is will find it very difficult to sort everything out.

Allot of it is outside the governments control, Gas prices are expected to rocket even further as Russia is planning to turn off supply to the whole of Europe for 3 months. That will cause a knock on effect nightmare. Windfall tax on the big energy firms, not legal as 92% of their profits are made outside of the UK. You would need worldwide agreement to tax them further. Not going to happen. Ramp up North Sea gas, not sure you can as some of the rigs were basically mothballed decades ago. We only get 5% of gas from Russia but the rest is controlled by market prices which they can inflate as they like. As we seeing.

I expect the next 2 years to be gruesome for many. And if Putin still around after that then it will continue in some shape or form.

Truss plans to stop doctors from leaving the NHS - armed soldiers at every hospital and GP surgery will escort them home and guard them overnight, before taking them back to work the next day.
