This could be fun later today ...
Labour's Manifesto 2024, page 18 ... "There will be no return to austerity"
Current expectation of Budget contents ... £40b to be cut from spending.
I wonder how she will square that circle if it comes about?

Even the normally balanced Chris Mason at the BBC is saying this is going to be big budget. If people don't feel the benefit by the end of the Parliament it'll be a Tory landslide.firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 11:13 amThis could be fun later today ...

But it's interesting that it took us 14 years to get here and Labour will be judged on 5.
I'm not impressed by Labour so far. Winter fuel payments being withdrawn was ill-judged IMO. Doesn't affect me but I'm certain it affects a lot of the most vulnerable.
I expect this thread to explode this afternooon.

So far there has been a 157% increase in the number of people appling and qualifying for pension credit. If that continues then around half of the original expected savings from the winter fuel payment will be wiped out. A very strange policy to introduce.greenmark wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 11:53 amEven the normally balanced Chris Mason at the BBC is saying this is going to be big budget. Didn't know that. Although it was a point Labour made when they announced the Winter payment cut. And also said they were going to seek out people not claiming pension credit they were entitled to, which qualifies them for the Winter fuel payment.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 12:13 pmSo far there has been a 157% increase in the number of people appling and qualifying for pension credit. Maybe Labour got it right after all? Still think not being able to produce tech to allow people to give back their payment in the 21st century is a bit disappointing.

It makes total sense to me to withdraw the blanket funding for all if it means that those who really need it can receive a little more.

Employers NI contributions now payable on salary over £5k per year!!!
Exactly. IF......as Archery69 suggests, the take up of pension credit has improved. They get the winter fuel payment. So the policy may have worked.jamesedwards wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 1:04 pmIt makes total sense to me to withdraw the blanket funding for all if it means that those who really need it can receive a little more.

Pretty sensible so far. The employer NI threshold drop will be a killer for some small businesses, but the £5k to £10.5k allowance increase will help the smallest.

As an individual the Budget doesn't really effect me, but Labour have now laid it all out and can no longer blame the Tory's today is the point where it's all on them.
The only thing I would say I have an issue with is throwing more money at the NHS, ideally I'd like to see a full recovery plan in place along with where savings can be made from within the NHS as there appears to be a lot of waste and mis-management within it before chucking an extra 22 billion at it and hoping for the best.
