Also, doing it that way you don't have the problem of everyone who lost out as a result of the crash seeking compensation and everyone who benefited keeping quiet.

The biggest single loss on BF i had was about 1k, it was when i had my closing bet set to be taken at S.P, which i used to often do for security reasons.

The Race started but for some reason BF did not suspend or turn the race in play.

The bet was matched by someone after the official off time and was later voided.

but of cause because of this the S.P was not taken either leaving me with a big liability  .

If you still have Bet Angel and / or the web site up, don't forgot to take screen shots and copy the log etc. for when they settle the market.

It's rare for the benefitters to own up

I had a massive stroke of luck in Nov 2008 when AFC Wimbledon were playing Wycombe in the FA Cup 1st round. It was Monday and live on Sky. I placed £2000 on Wycombe at 2.08 hoping to trade out at Evens, not knowing BF had a planned maintenance at 5.30pm. They were hoping to be back up at 7.30, but there were problems and didn't return until after 8pm. When they returned Wycombe were 2-0 up, I greened up at 1.08 for £1800 profit

Of course the bet stands, as it does when the site goes down and you are unable to trade out. Each time we open a trade we are making a bet, and we have to accept the inherent risk in that as an occupational hazard.
All the moaning, griping and nit-picking about exact shutdown times won't change that one iota. If, as one trader did, you have an open position which leaves you liable to a loss of £5,000, you just have to take it on the chin.
Presumably, if he's prepared to risk that kind of capital, he must have a bank many times bigger than that and he can recover those losses. If not, he stark-staring mad!

betfair will continue to get away with, as long as people have the views above...

complain like mad and in the meantime to be safe
punt according to this maxim....in play actually means, could be in play and probably will be most of the time, unless we get a problem, which we wont forwarn you about...

I think we all agree that in cases like these all bets should be voided. Any chance at all that if we got a major petition going asking for this betfair would listen?

My commiserations to anyone affected by this. I've had it happen before, can be really gut wrenching

I suppose only traders would agree that all bets should be voided though, punters and bookmakers would probably disagree!

i think their arrogance is so huge they would not take a blind bit of notice of a petition sadly. in my opinion only a viable alternative that offers real competeion will ever make them take any notice. although i would sign one; i believe its important to complain, not just in betfairs case, in any situation where you are in effect being shafted.

this is not the first time its happened to me (or others), sometimes its in my favour, sometimes not.it levels itself out over time (my opinion).
its there holier than thou arraogance that narks me.

I think the ideal situation would be for Betfair to honour all bets and lays, and to refund anyone who's out of pocket. Why should anyone else suffer because they can't make sure their site stays up? When you pay 5% commission on everything you win, surely the least you can expect is not to be out of pocket due to Betfair's incompetance!

Sadly, there's not a snowflake in hell's chance of that happening!
