As another important weekend of football approaches, the ELO ratings site highlights something to think about next season.
Notes
The interpretation is that the newly promoted teams tend to struggle, with the odd one usually performing as an outlier, and then struggling in their second season. (previously Sheff Utd, recently Leeds, next season Brentford?) - Although Everton still look fragile based on the ratings.
Liverpool look good to win the title. (even after Man City slipping up in Champions League)
Newcastle can spend their way to a top 6 finish next season.
Southampton have some work to do based on the ratings. (Ward-Prowse to Man Utd £75m would further weaken them)
Notts Forest look strong for the play-offs.
Of course this doesn't count for shite if Putin nukes us before the season begins...

All joking aside (for the moment anyway), I fancy City now to go and win their remaining games. Stopping Liverpool winning a potential quad is probably as much if not more a motivation as City themselves winning the league.

Brutal press conference by Pep Guardiola...
Q) Was De Bruyne taken off because he was injured?
A) No it was tactical
Q) Is this group of players capable of winning the Champions League?
A) I don't know
Sounds like he wants the owners to get the chequebook out again

I don't really think it's down to luck or Yaya Toure's African shamans that Pep can't win the CL without Messi with the most stacked expensive teams ever. What is it now, record 6 lost semis?
I like what Clarence Seedorf said : “Manchester City, like PSG, lack a mentality. Real Madrid's mentality isn't something created in a year or two, or even ten. It's about coming to a club where you know you're a part of something much greater than yourself."
Surely this massive history etc would give you belief that things will work out in the end and give you that much needed composure to really clutch it when the opportunity finally comes, this group has done it 3 times before in a row (!) and you simply cannot buy this mentality. And it's very much the opposite when you've never done it before, the monumental occasion gets the better of you and you can choke at key moments.

Lucky or not I don't know but City were definitely naive. not sure if that's all Pep's fault or just not having the right type of player in that particular situation. With someone like a Kompany or Toure on the pitch I don't think that would have happened.
I like this from Dietmar Hamann as well : “If you give players responsibility they act responsible. If you try to play the game for them they won’t. Guardiola suffocates teams and players. Compare that to Ancelotti or Klopp teams. I always feel with Guardiola's teams that he kind of takes the responsibility off them, and you can’t win games on a tactic board. Once the whistle goes, you have to make decisions and not for the first time, and his teams made the wrong decisions at the wrong time."
Ties in with my thoughts at the start of the season

Meanwhile, Ancelotti is asking his players who wants to come on as a sub and openly calls them his friends. Even Klopp's motto is "I am your friend, but not your best friend." Even if you miss too many sitters you still get a hug at full-time.
