Russian general, Lt Gen Yakov Rezantsev Killed.
That’s number 8.

Putin's palaces are his top priority. It's rumoured he spent $500M on a toilet brush.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 11:54 amMakes you wonder where all that $500 million per day from gas and oil has been going. Obviously it’s not been on military equipment.

Just had a squint at Russia's GDP. They were going great until the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Then sanctions and GDP just fell away dramatically.Kai wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 6:27 amWell, the whole thing is about the newly discovered natural resources, isn't it, something we didn't really know at the start of this invasion.
In 2012 they discovered massive reserves of natural gas in the Crimea area, and what happened next? Crimea annexed by Russia 2 years later. Huge shale gas deposits discovered in the Donbas region? Suddenly there are nazis there and this part of Ukraine has to be taken away from them, the British company Shell was going to help them commercially sell it from 2017 but the war in 2014 conveniently prevented this.
Basically Ukraine was on its way to become the next petrostate like Russia, but in Kremlin they weren't too fond of a future where we instead buy gas from a pro-western NATO member like Ukraine. I think John McCain said it best years ago : "Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country."
Overall very disappointing to see yet another brutal conflict over natural resources, we're basically like rats fighting over leftover scraps on a dying planet.
This may explain why Russians see Putin differently than we do. 160% rise in living standards then bam! And Putin has blamed the wicked West for Russians being hit in the pocket. The latest (and future) sanctions are going to cheese Russians off even more. Who they decide to blame is yet to become clear.
If I told somebody that I'm the only honest person in the world and he should only trust me, he'd laugh in my face. That's more or less what Putin is saying, the whole world and every TV news station except his is lying - why can't the average Russian see through that?greenmark wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 1:54 pmJust had a squint at Russia's GDP. I had been wondering why a Grand master chess champion (Garry Kasparov) was continually giving commentary and analysis to news stations these last few weeks, I'd assumed it was just because he was from Russia, but just finding out he's the chairman of the Human Rights Foundation explains it

Leaked Kremlin document shows 9,800 Russian soldiers killed and 16,000 injured of which 3,400 are critical.
Putin better get his troops out quickly otherwise Russian victory day parade on 9th May will be embarrassing.

He's always been a political activist and critic of Putin and I think he's been arrested and beaten up or at least roughly treated by the police. A much-admired chess genius, probably the GOAT at the time, Russia could do far worse than having him as a leader.Dallas wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 2:31 pmI had been wondering why a Grand master chess champion (Garry Kasparov) was continually giving commentary and analysis to news stations these last few weeks, I'd assumed it was just because he was from Russia, but just finding out he's the chairman of the Human Rights Foundation explains it
With any luck, Putin will accidentally get run over by a tank on victory day parade.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 3:32 pmLeaked Kremlin document shows 9,800 Russian soldiers killed and 16,000 injured of which 3,400 are critical.
