Well today could be tricky and the start could not be harder with the Cavalry ..oops sorry Triumph Hurdle  This race is the proverbial cavalry charge and poses a real conundrum for punters. I had one of my greatest ever results when Katarino won this race 8-)

1:30 Cheltenham

I can only go on my interpretation of the scant form on offer and look at trends from previous winners. I came down in favour of Carlito Brigante who looks promising and has form to accompany that view. His price reflects that though and I would look to trade this horse and probably green up as his price is short. The other horse of interest is Alaivan who was a smart flat horse. Just keep an eye on the price of Advisor as the Nicholls horse will attract support solely because Ruby Walsh chose this one instead of the Mullins' horse! EDIT. The price of Carlito is now way too short. I looked at this race a bit more and Soldatino could have improvement in him

This is probably the weakest Triumph Hurdle for a few years but it is still competitive and I would not be surprised to see a big priced winner!

2:05 Cheltenham

Now where did I put that pin? Rock Noir is highly regarded and he is top weight on his UK debut. I'm sure they aren't lining up to make up the numbers and his French form gives him a shout but that is hardly good enough to go overboard. Perhaps an early position in case money does come for him? Tricky race and trading only from what I can see.EDIT Oldrik is potentially well handicapped having looked at this in more detail. The price is 12.00 on Betfair and he could be a good horse for a back to lay trade

2:40 Cheltenham

I see that Quel Esprit is going to run despite hitting the deck earlier in the week. I had a quick look at the stats I had to hand and I could not find a single horse that ran again having fallen and actually won the race. I see it is trading around 8.00 which seems very low and I think when others pick up on the trend this could be a drifter. The horse I like is Tell Massini who has put up some great performances. I have a couple of concerns in that I wouldn't want him to get too revved up and set off too fast. I am also slightly concerned about the ground as I am sure he would be even better with a bit more give. The other horse that has shown improvement over this type of trip is Shinrock Paddy and again my concern would be ground with him too. They seem to be the best two horses in this race though and I would be surprised if one of them didn't win.

The Gold Cup

My back is killing me so I will be brief. I think we need to find a horse to beat Kauto Star and that will not be Denman. I have gone through the form repeatedly, I have watched the videos and I have checked the sectional times. Please don't get me wrong, I am a big Denman fan but I think he beat a below par Kauto Star when he won the Gold Cup and he was easily put in his place when they met again the following year. I just don't think a fit Denman at his best can beat a fit Kauto Star at his best. I think Imperial Commander has a chance of beating them all. He have Kauto Star a real fright at Haydock and there were no excuses that day. Kauto Star tackled that race in rude health and he only just held on. I sat with friends and discussed this and all they kept saying was "what happened when they met at Kempton?" That was a fair question but like a lot of people they don't want to listen to the answer. I reckon the track just didn't suit Imperial Commander and anyone who has been to the track will confirm the bends are tight and it's not a galloping track. Kauto Star is a versatile athlete who can adapt to any course and in particular Kempton where he can adjust and excel while his rivals are all struggling to keep up. This game is all about opinions and that is mine for Imperial Commander's poor show at Kempton. He will enjoy the galloping track at Cheltenham and has a great record at the course. Okay so he lost a four runner race at odds-on but that was a farcical race where they had a jog around for almost 3 miles and then had a sprint for home!

The Gold Cup will be run at a true pace and the searching gallop (probably set by Carruthers and/or Denman) will find out the horses that don't truly stay 3m 2f around Cheltenham. This will suit Imperial Commander and should afford him the best possible chance of winning.

Also keep an eye on Cooldine who is no back number. He hosed up in the RSA Chase last year and hopefully is back to somewhere near his best - this horse has lots of improvement so should not be written off.

Even these two may not be good enough to dethrone Kauto Star but I think they have a better chance than Denman.

I can't wait to see how the Gold Cup plays out. I keep looking at Denman's price and wondering whether it's correct? But then I know nothing about horses! I think it's just my contrary spirit coming through.

My SP predictions:

Kauto Star

Current Price: $1.73
My SP Prediction: $2

Denman

Current Price: $6.2
My SP Prediction: $5.5

Imperial Commander

Current Price: $9.60
My SP Prediction: $7

Cooldine

Current Price: $11
My SP Prediction: $10

My Prediction:

Imperial Commander is the likely 'steamer'. Should trade on Imperial Commander now, Back at $9.60, Lay at less than $7. Kauto Star should drift slightly, Denman should move in slightly. The rest should be static or drifting.

I think your numbers are okay on some of them but 2.00 on Kauto Star is way too big. If that horse was at 2.00 and the others at the price you suggest then the book would already be over broke and if others drifted it would be getting worse and I would be hammering the market and backing the field with every penny I had in my account.

I think we'll see Denman stay around 6.00 with only the odd foray into the 5.60-5.80 mark. He may actually drift to 6.60 because I think punters will pick up on comments from Paul Nicholls where everything he says is a positive about Kauto Star and Denman is hardly mentioned. I think they also know that Denman cannot beat Kauto Star.

Kauto Star will probably not get above 1.84-1.85 and as soon as it does big players will step in. I can see him going off closer to 1.67 than anything else. If he gets to 2.00 then even I will be having a bet

We'll all find out around 3:26 (and ~43 seconds) because if they start on the dot of 3:20 the winner should have crossed the line!

Good luck whatever method you follow!

Fist off glad to see Zenyatta still around after unloading entire bank on Dunguib on Tuesday

Had a good day yesterday with 2 winners, a second and fourth :) Trading was also good.

On good ground I like good class flat horses in the Truimph Hurdle so Alaivan for me - also ex Aga Khan flat breds have good festival records. My worry about Alaivan is that the Irish have performed poorly so far in the Novice Hurdle events which is usually there strong point. Nicky Henderson is in good form so I will also add Soldatino. Have any Cheltenham winners warmed up at Musselburgh? For me Carlito Brigante has been winning races in the mud by grinding results out and hence won't have the speed to win this.

County Hurdle - Novices have a good record in festival handicaps so Belvano, Puyol (I don't like his Barcelona namesake!), Secret Dancer & Tito Bustillo for me. To be honest there aren't many horses you can rule out for this but BELVANO would be my first choice from the above list.

2.40pm Agree with Jolly Green that Quel Esprit has a major negative stat to overcome to win this and at 8/1 is poor value. It's only because Ruby is on that he is this price and if I were a bookmaker I would be out to get him. Restless Harry and Tell Massini are confident selections. Cappa Blue is a lively outsider so worth an e/w squeak at 33/1.

3.20 First off - the only way Kauto Star will touch even money is if he dumps Ruby going to the start and then gallops off around Prestbury Park. Let's face, it is not going to happen.

Try looking at this race from a bookmakers perspective. So far they have had a good week so it is not in their interests to take on Kauto Star also they know that Denman & Imperial Commander are likely to finish in the front three so they will be trying to control the SP for their E/W liabilities. Therefore, the prices are about right for the front three in terms of percentages. Denman is currently weak on the Exchanges though and because of this Kauto Star (currently 1.72/1.73 Betfair) is likely to shorten up if the current Denman weakness continues.

Don't know why but I have a nagging feeling we are in for a shock result which could send the bookies home with big smiles! However, I love Kauto Star as a horse (can't back him at the odds) so will just enjoy trading and watching this one.

I don't like the Foxhunters as a betting medium so will pass on this race.

The 4.40pm - Clova Island, Radium, Ashkazar & Balzaccio are the shortlist.

In the finale - Green Belt Elite and Safari Journey will carry the e/w cash.

Enjoy it, but remember there is always tomorrow and other opportunities so manage your stakes according to your betting bank. No need to go all in! ;)

I think Denman can beat Kauto, even my dream last night had Denman winning and Kauto falling

I'm backing Denman and covering the back with a lay of Kauto, I think it is more open than the current prices.

However, I won't be backign and laying for much, more for fun :)

Andy I'm confused mate :? If Denman wins the lay of Kauto adds to your pot but if Kauto wins it's a double loss from your pot??

Is it a typo?

I think Kauto get beat, I think Denman will win but I think there are others in the field that could also beat him if it is not Denman. I just don't think Kauto wins - but I am only going to be doing it small for some fun and added interest in the race. Don't be thinking I am going to be back or laying for much at all!

I didn't see 125k, but I just made about 75% that I normally make in a day on the first race. Loving Cheltnam this year, only lost on 1 market so far on all 3.1 days :).
