Has anybody got any insight into how these are calculated? There seems to be a heavy bias towards 'protecting the layer' built in from my observation they also seem to just be totally random at times. Especially egregious examples seem to be outsiders in the place market, but the Win is also sometimes a culprit.

Also regarding place deductions, would anybody be able to explain simply how these are calculated?

I backed a horse @ 14.0 yesterday which ended up being reduced to 7.07. Deductions from Betfair added up to 72.33%. I was ultimately charged ~50% on my bet though.

How does one get to 7.07 from 14.0 here?

Place market deductions
a) Betfair 11.15% - Sportsbet $0.05 - TAB $0.02
b) Betfair 10.46% - Sportsbet $0.04 - TAB $0.01
c) Betfair 7.96% - Sportsbet $0.03 - TAB $0.00
d) Betfair 5.36% - Sportsbet $0.02 - TAB $0.00
e) Betfair 4.0% - Sportsbet $0.00 - TAB $0.00
f) Betfair 7.01% - Sportsbet $0.03 - TAB $0.00
g) Betfair 14.87% - Sportsbet $0.07 - TAB $0.05
h) Betfair 11.52% - Sportsbet $0.06 - TAB $0.02

Sportsbet charged $0.29 in the place market for these same selections. Ladbrokes $0.10 and TAB $0.10. I know most corporates don't apply deductions for large prices.. but still how do we suppose Betfair can get to 72%, or even 50% here?

The next race of the day there were 8 horses pulled out from a field of 18 (Mornington Race 6 21/06), so 10 went to post. Some prominent horses pulled but nothing above 8.0, and a few roughies. Betfair deductions in the place market added up to 126% here... I know from my previous bet that it's probably not quite that much.. e.g., I doubt you would actually lose money if you backed a place winner even though it quotes over 100%... but has anyone got any insight into what a deduction of 126% actually is in reality? TAB had place deductions of $0.49 here for this race and Sportsbet $0.48.

Had read this but didn’t add up to me. For example I had $158 bet @ 14.0. ‘Winnings’ from that as per the explanation in this article would be $158 x 13.0 = $2054 x 72.33% reduction factor = $568 profit. But my profit was $958, not $568.

Also doesn’t help me determine how betfair are getting all these %’s that are 2,3 even 4 times I’ve seen over what the bookmakers are deducting.

Without looking into the specifics of that race, the timing of the scratchings is important as well. If half the field was scratched at 7am, and you had the bet at 10am, then your bet isnt subject to the earlier scratchings.

I get that… all deductions were in play for me from my bet timing though. I listed the deductions from my account summary page which lists all applicable. From your understanding of how it works… should my payout have been $568 from what I mentioned though?

This might explain it:
