Hi,

Looking for some advice from people with knowledge of Motorised Satellite Dishes for picking up sports feeds, such as:

~ Football
~ Cricket
~ Tennis
~ American racing

From what I have gathered so far it is possible to buy a setup for around £200 that will allow you to pick up games that are and are not shown on Sky by picking up free to air feeds that are shown abroad (or feeds that have been cracked using info on the internet but I don't want to go into that here as it isnt the place to). I have heard people use these systems to get the Saturday 3pm games as well.

Obviously Betfiar have some sort of setup that allows them to do this as they offer all these markets inplay, also pubs show them if you find the right ones but they are doing it illegally as they are taking money from the viewers. As I understand it if you are doing it in your own home it is not illegal.

Can anyone offer me some advice on what is needed etc.

TIA.

Jollygreen is probably the man you want to call/PM. He knows a lot about this sort of stuff.

There are plenty of feeds to sporting events out there but there are issues to overcome if they are to be used to advantage.

For example, the feeds may be encrypted rather than free to air. Then, depending on the encryption method used, different equipment is required.

For example, SKY sporting feeds are generally encrypted in RAS as are SIS horse racing feeds. To clear these you need a RAS capable decoder (Tandberg or similar) plus the RAS codes. The RAS codes are available from the satellite feed uplink engineers if you can find one who will be "friendly for a fee".

Other feeds can be "soft" encrypted using mpeg2 4.2.2 or mpeg4 4.2.2 This type of encryption is easy to clear with a 4.2.2 capable receiver such as a Quali, AZ Box or USB/internal PC receiver.

The 3:00PM Saturday afternoon live football used to be easy to clear with a Dragon CAM, however they changed the encryption a while back to a currently unhacked encryption. However, you could legitimately view this if you purchased a valid subscription from Canal Plus Scandinavia. All you need is a dish pointing at 1W and the relevant card/CAM receiver.

Finally, there are the free to air feeds that are unencrypted and capable of being viewed by anyone with a general decent satellite receiver.

As regards motorising a dish, the cost is cheap unless you wish to get inclined orbit satellites. These are often used by broadcasters for feeds as their commercial equipment keeps a "lock" on the satellite while it wobbles about around its general orbital position. A standard motorised dish will lose the signal as the satellite traverses its inclined orbit then pick it up again as it passes through the equatorial plane. Manual adjustment equipment is relatively cheap using a Jaeger 1224EL with elevation adjustment, automatic adjustment equipment such as an RC2000C cost a couple of grand.

Bit long winded I know, but covered most of the subject in brief.

I agree Dog, there is no easy "one size fits all" answer. The Holy Grail is SIS feeds but that encryption cannot be hacked - I AM NOT CONDONING ILLEGAL ACTIVITY!! You would need to find a pre-production feed and whilst they occur from time to time they change regularly. They will also be on obscure satellites where you will probably need "inclined orbit" and a dish of >1metre in diameter  Even then it could be a game of catch me if you can - TV one minute, test card the next!

Most of the football at 3pm on Saturday is now distributed over a fibre optic feed these days so viewing that is impossible unless you know a crooked engineer who can patch you in. There are some European and Asian services for UK football and you can buy cards for these. They come in at about £1K and then there are various other cards where you need updates via the internet. The latter can be more trouble than they are worth. I see Dog mentioned the Scandinavian football but I am not sure how much that costs. It's been a while but 1 degree West (was that called Thor?) needs decent LOS (line of sight) and a dish of 1 metre minimum - as I say it's been a while so perhaps Dog can update?

You can get a lot of Euro football free to air via Hotbird and Eutlesat but you would need to join one of the satellite forums to locate the latest feed data.

As Dog says, you can do this on the cheap for a few hundred pounds but that would be European Football from HotBird etc. If you try and get other feeds and want a reliable system then it will run into the thousands.

It can take over your life and you can spend more time trying to find the feeds than you do watching them!

Jolly,

Yes, it is "Thor" at 1W with the live 3PM Premiership matches on Saturdays. I had pictures for a good while using a Diablo CAM with a CAS interface to update the CAM when the codes changed. I think a legitimate subscription may be around £600 per year but I am not exactly sure on the amount. It depends on where you are in the Uk as to the dish size, the further North the smaller the dish. As you say, a 1m or 1.2m is preferable if down South.

Nowadays, I find that one of the best options for live raw feeds is to use a "Quali" to get the 4.2.2 feeds which are generally not viewable with most satellite receivers (except Quali, AZ Box or PC). There are generally a couple of matches each day over the weekend available to view live that are covered by Betfair "In Play". However, you need to be aware that the 5 second delay Betfair place on soccer transactions could negate the feed advantage.

I had a nice "feed" last night for the Besitkas v Man Utd game, it was approx 3 seconds ahead of SKY but there was the usual 5 second delay imposed by Betfair on soccer matches.
