I have just received an email from Betfair informing that:
"the base commission rate for markets in Hungary is to be increased to 6% from Monday 17th June 2013"

I have written to Betfair for clarification whether that means events/markets in Hungary or for all markets wherever played.

I suspect that this will apply to all Betfair users in Hungary, and is deal between Betfair and the government here to collect some sort of tax revenue from internet gambling. The Hungarian government didn't like slot machines and banned them (except in licensed casinos), however online betting is ok.

I am not happy about this, however if it is some form of insurance so that the Hungarian government is happy to tolerate internet gambling, then I feel it is a small price to pay.

Fortunately my bank is tied to a UK account so at least that cannot be taxed as income tax as it could one day here in Hungary. Unlike this story about poker players.

Has anyone else been affected by something similar?

I'm pretty sure on the conference call they said they were testing pricing in five countries.

From what I know the 'test' was as follows: -

In Bulgaria the default Market Base Rate is 7.5%
In Poland the default Market Base Rate is 6.5%
In Norway and Finland the default Market Base Rate is 5.5%

I think they mentioned Hungary as well? But from this post maybe it is no longer a test? Have they only just told you or has this been in place for a little while?

I received the email today. As it stated this new commission rate will come into effect on June 17th.

Just heard back from Betfair. It appears that as a resident of Hungary I will be paying a 6% commission base rate. It sucks big time but I did worry that the government here would take a hard line on sports betting.

Hi

I'm portuguese, and i currently live here in Portugal. But next Septembre i'm going to Hungary on Erasmus.

I would like to know how is trading there? Here in Portugal there are no rules about trading yet, meaning that it is perfectly ok to do it and we dont pay any commition (except betfair 5% or premium charges).

Another question is about streamings. Here in Portugal we have access to spanish, german, french, turkish, dutch championships, also some south american football aswell. Some of these aren't betfair live streams but bet365 live streams. Can someone tell me if in Hungary we have access to some of these?

Thank you!
