Sol Campbell has claimed he would have been "England captain for more than 10 years" if he had been born white.

For Campbell to presume he'd have been picked as captain for a full ten years ahead of England legends like Beckham, Shearer and Gerrard had he been white, when he wasn't even a captain at club level for most of his career, is a tad, er, presumptuous...

He was captain at Spurs for a long time but I think its absurd for him to say that to be honest. Although, Michael Owen being picked ahead of his is ridiculous also!

Tosser

I suppose if he was white, that goal against Argentina would have stood, or Spurs would have offered him a massive contract to stop him going to Arsenal

He earned a fantastic amount of money, and had a wonderful career. To come out with all this shit paints him in a very dim light

Actually, when I first heard this I thought it was Sol raising the racism flag. But, after listening to the comments on MOTD3 - I have to agree with him.

I always wondered why Alan Shearer was captain, when most of England's success has come from defender/midfielders as captain.

For me the most pointless captains over the last 30 years have been, in order. Forgetting players with only a few games as captain.

1. David Beckham
2. Alan Shearer
3. Peter Shilton
4. Rio Ferdinand
5. Michael Owen
6. Gary Lineker

Pdupre,

You ideally want your captain to be someone who inspires his fellow players, and no-one can deny that the players you list were inspiring for England. Shearer, for example, scored in nearly 1 in 2 games he played for England, and Beckham's work rate was second to none.

Also, the fact that Rio Ferdinand has captained the England team seven times sort of blows the racism argument out of the water.

I hope that the FA sue Campbell. He has made an extremely serious allegation, without providing a shred of evidence. And the BBC, being good liberals, don't call him on his bs...

Total rubbish, inspiration come from the Manager, the man running the match for you needs organisational skills.

I think the shred of evidence is the fact that Shearer and Beckham were captain in over 50 of the games Campbell played for England.

They were both absolutely useless as Captains.

Defenders make better captains in general than any other position. Their whole game is based on organisation and disclipline plus they get the best overall view of the match. Campbell should have been captain 2000-2004, he was a world class player in those years and just hearing him speak you can tell he has more brain than Owen, Shearer & Beckham put together. Beckham was captain for marketing purposes imo which is an effing disgrace

Didn't he use this card once before? Not 100% sure but I seem to have vague memories of some issue to get out of a contract after a week at pompey?

Ahead of Euro 2012, Sol Campbell expressed concerns about racism in the Ukraine, encouraging black and Asian fans to stay away, and was feted by the BBC as an expert on the subject.

Presumably, in addition to being a full-time football pro, he spent lots of time reading up on Ukrainian society - either that, or he presenting ill-informed speculation as fact...
