In my job I would have been looking for people with a taxable income in excess of £100,000 to point out their marginal rate of tax to them and advising how to rearrange their affairs where possible to get their taxable income below £100,000 by switching some of their income into regular tax free capital payments.jamesedwards wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 1:47 pmThe actual current income tax rates are as follows:
0% £0-£12,570
20% £12,571-£50,270
40% £50271 to £100,000
60% £100,000 to £125,140
45% >£125,141
It's weird how income tax becomes so heavily regressive after £100k, and that nobody ever discusses the effective 60% income tax bracket between £100k and £125k. It's one of the most stealthiest of stealth taxes.

Sorry to be picky on a technicality Jim but it's just "income" whether earned or otherwise and in some 'peculiar' situations it could be because the taxation of your fringe benefits (car, accommodation etc.) takes you over £100,000!

Trump butters-up all leaders in public. What he publicly is irrelevant, it's what he says and does in private that counts. Look at his reaction when asked about Zelenskyy being a dictator ... "did I say that?"
Trump seems hell bent on revenge this time and with anti-EU Vance by his side I don’t think these tariffs are going to stop. The rest of the world is going to replace the USD with another global currency IMO.
Mark Carney for Canadian PM is now into 1.5 and Labor in Aus are clear favourites too, the right in those countries probably can’t believe how unlucky they’ve been.

Not one for politics but::
My personal opinion is that we should ban Amazon, Ban Facebook and ban Twitter (x).
We should not allow sex offenders into the country and certainly not have an ordinance with our King.
I don't have a problem with him looking after the US because the Tariffs will be paid by having more expensive goods in America.
As for the tariffs on cars i feel sorry for the workers in the uk car industry but i think this will be short term because the usa's car industry are reliant on parts from abroad.
Its going to end in tears.. Abraham Lincoln, Kennedy brothers.
I think Trump should remember who rallied round after 9/11.
As i said tears will be shed...

I'm surprised they dropped at all. Surely these tariffs have already been priced in over the preceding few weeks? I expect they will quickly recover the ground lost today. Good buying opportunity IMO.
Trump seems a lot different this time, he can't run again (you wouldn't think!) so why should he care if he burns bridges with other countries.jamesedwards wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 1:36 pmI'm surprised they dropped at all. British investors have been absolutely fucked the last few months due to the weak $, if Trump continues and no reason that he won't then the $ is going to get a hell of a lot worse.
Its almost too late for him to go back on it now, the trust has been broken, along with talking about taking over Greenland and Panama, he's shown he's far more volatile this time around.

The ongoing market turmoil is really weird. Surely this is playing out exactly as expected? Yet global markets have dropped 5%-10% since Trump's tariff announcement.
The old adage 'buy the rumour and sell the news' has been totally blown out of the water this time.

Trump would always backtrack in his first term if the market went crazy, this time it feels different. He's on a revenge tour.jamesedwards wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 3:25 pmThe ongoing market turmoil is really weird. Surely this is playing out exactly as expected? And with all the bridges he's burning, new alliances will form, USA and in particular Republicans will never be trusted fully again.
