Whatever you feel comfortable with would be the short answer.

'Banks' are always a bit of a vague term as plenty of people blow the bank then just reload another. If you're starting out your main aim should be to protect your betting balance at all costs, as soon as you're winning and confident in your abilities your aim should be to ensure you're using it to it's full potential.
do you mean if you were using a "bank" of £1000 you would only trade with a max laibilty of £100 as oppossed to a max liability of £1000?marko236 wrote:Agree with protecting bank at all costs, but you have to come up with a number of what you are going to risk.
if so why bother having a bank of £1000 if your not going to deploy it, why not just use a "bank"of £100.
(or am i not understanding?)

He may well be trading more than one market at a time, everything really depends on your style of trading and risks you take. Like clownshoes said you really should be staking amounts you're comfortable with.to75ne wrote:do you mean if you were using a "bank" of £1000 you would only trade with a max laibilty of £100 as oppossed to a max liability of £1000?marko236 wrote:Agree with protecting bank at all costs, but you have to come up with a number of what you are going to risk.

I'm happy to risk up to 50% of my balance on a single market on the assumption if some freak occurrence causes me to lose it I can still continue to earn a living without refunding my account. But someone new continually taking risks and going inplay is going to get pretty pissed off continually reloading their account by overstaking.
I spread my trades over the markets but only risk 10% when a trade is made.to75ne wrote:do you mean if you were using a "bank" of £1000 you would only trade with a max laibilty of £100 as oppossed to a max liability of £1000?marko236 wrote:Agree with protecting bank at all costs, but you have to come up with a number of what you are going to risk.

I still find it hard to trade, so i spread my money, i only take trades that are more likely to win than lose.to75ne wrote:thanks marko and spreadbetting for the explanation.
i only ever ever trade pre off horses usually one market at a time.
i forgot its not uncommon for some to trade several markets at once.
thanks

I need to significantly lower the stakes. My plan is to reduce the exposure to max 5-10 % pre race and 0,5-1% in play.
In my case, OVER STAKING was the main factor for failing.

I agree with to75ne and Spreadbetting on another. i asked this question many years ago. I divide the risk in my bank ie
say £1000 bank
Highest odds to trade 7.0 = £100 stake 10% of bank
Lowest Odds to trade 1.5 £600
60% of whole bank at any one time
But it depends on the markets £600 would only be staked on if the market is offering that at meetings like Cheltenham as at a evening meeting like Wolvahampton if you stake that your in Jail if market go,s against you you cant get out. So the real answer i think it is what you are comfortable with but it depends what volume the market is offereing. I have the 60% risk backed up in Betdaq should a freak outage take place in Betfair
