Hi Guys,

I'm considering upgrading to the VPS and am curious to hear your feedback on this topic.

I generally have a very good internet connection but over the past few weeks have been intermittently losing the signal. I have back-up but it can take 20-30 seconds before it kicks into action. Doesn't sound like a long time but as most of you will know a lot can happen in such a short space of time!

Would the VPS improve the stability of the connection? (Sorry if its a stupid question but I'm not the most technically minded person:))
And to anybody who has the VPS has it made a significant difference in your trading?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

P.

Hi

I have been using a VPS for a long time, even in the days before the guys at Bet Angel offered the service.

Personally I think it is worth the investment but I will acknowledge that it will not suit everyone. For me I like the speed of data flow that comes from the Betfair servers. The response time for bets and odds rarely moves off zero and it's that time that is critical when trading.

The main argument against the VPS and the increased speed is that there is an added delay between your PC and the VPS. I don't subscribe to that line of thought and have tested both local trading on my PC and remote trading via the VPS. IMHO the VPS wins hands down each time. The number crunching and data transmission takes place on the VPS and you just get the data/video refresh sent down your normal internet connection.

If you take part in any in-running trading then it is also much quicker. That could be closing out a position or trying to grab a price - it happens much quicker.

I would say try it for a month (if that is possible) and make your decision after that month. I can trade on both but given the choice I would choose the VPS every time.

Hi
I use the VPS service and find it very useful as I spend a fair bit of time away traveling.
If you are manually trading; then even though the connection speed between the VPS server and Betfair will be faster and more reliable, if your connection between your home and the VPS is intermittent, then you will be no better off.

When you say your internet is playing up is it that the internet is playing up in general or just when connecting to Betfair.

I used to have a problem where my internet was fine in general but had a lot of problems connecting with Betfair. The VPS fixed that as I was now connecting with the VPS and the VPS was connecting with Betfair.

However, that problem fixed itself and I no longer use the VPS.

I was able to get response on my normal internet of around 60ms.

The VPS gives you near 0ms connection with Betfair but then there is the time between the VPS and you and the difference between the 60ms I can get normally and the time between my PC and the VPS was basically the same so I saw no benefit in fact I found it more annoying due to the lag when moving things around the screen and the fact it wouldn't fully extend over my 4 screens.

If you are doing automated trading where you can sit the Bot on the VPS then I would say it is definitely worth it but for normal trading I would say it isn't.

However, the best way is to go and do the one week trial for £1 and see for yourself if it is any good, if not just cancel it. At worse you waste £1 and a bit of time at best you solve your internet issues.

I couldn't find this trial on the website, should I send an email to the support in order to have it activated?

Thanks for all your posts guys,

They've been very helpful. I think I might hold off for now as it doesnt seem like the VPS would make much difference to me.

Thanks again

The shortest time you can purchase is 1 month from us. However, remember that this is set up ready to go with the server edition of Bet Angel Professional. And the server edition will only work on servers supplied by us.

Sorry I didn't explain, I was reffering to the VPS that I use to use which was before Bet Angel launched their own VPS service.

The one I used was with Tagadab. If you google them you will find them easily enough.

I signed up for a month to give it a whirl. It's probably worth the investment if you have crappy hardware/internet connection problems (like me on the other side of the world trying to use a mal-functioning lap-top) and/or your strategy involves an automated spread-sheet (also what I'm doing). But you probably need to be winning rather than losing. It has to pay for itself, otherwise it all quickly becomes a rather expensive hobby. Will try for one month. Hopefully my betting is good enough to at least pay for it and hold the line over break-even, or else my BetAngel career comes to an end ;)
