What was this strange ladder activity all about?

Attracted by news of the numerous players missing for Scotland in their friendly against Italy, I had placed a back on Italy at 1.66. The price gradually shortened until it was 1.62. Then the ladder prices showed 1.61-1.63 for about 5 minutes during which it was impossible to leave any bet, back or lay, sitting at 1.62, so that 1 tick gap just would not fill.

Meanwhile, I saw bets, many of which were exactly the same amount (£1,262 I think) getting what appeared to be self-matched; instantly- without sitting for any time in that gap. The volume on the draw and Scotland didn't change at all, and volume on correct score was pathetic, so cross matching doesn't appear to have been involved here.

Most tick levels had about £5k matched, but this 1.62 level had £71k, before shortening a bit then suddenly whizzing out to 1.66 again. What do you think was going on?

Perhaps cross matching? It's difficult to see without live information. I'm guess it was fairly illquid?

Yes it was, but the reason I asked was that cross matching didn't seem to be the culprit at all. It was a 5 minute frenzy of thousands getting insta-matched at the same level.
